WHAT IS IDEA?

Law passed originally in 1975

Requires schools to make sure that children with disabilities receive the
proper intervention, special education, and related services

Two Parts:

Part B: School Age Children (ages 3-21)

Part C: Infants and Toddlers (Birth-2)

IEP-Individualized Education
Programs

Document outlining the general curriculum that would be best suited to help a child who
receives special education

Created by teachers, parents, school staff, and often including the student

Contents of IEP:

Current Performance

Annual Goals

Special Education and Related Services

Participation With Nondisabled Children

Participation in State and District-Wide Tests

Dates and Places

Transition Service Needs

Needed Transition Services

Section 504 Plans

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal law enforced


by the Department of Educations Office for Civil Rights (OCR)

States that discrimination against the recipients of federal funds based


on disabilities is prohibited.

Provides equal access for students with disabilities to aids and services
at public elementary and secondary schools and colleges and
universities

Also states that states that all students with disabilities are entitled to
FAPE

Evaluation and Placement decisions for students with disabilities must


follow appropriate procedures to avoid misclassification and incorrect
placement

FAPE-Free Appropriate Public


Education

All school-age children with disabilities defined by Section 504 and IDEA
are entitled to FAPE

Appropriate education programs must be designed to meet the unique


needs of individuals with disabilities

Students with disabilities must be educated in the same setting, to the


maximum extent appropriate, with nondisabled students

Federally funded school districts are required to provide education free


of charge to students with disabilities,

if they are unable to provide said education, they are to cover tuition and
related costs of any placement in a private school or related program

LRE-Least Restrictive Environment

LRE states that children with disabilities are required by federal law to
be educated, to the maximum extent appropriate, with students that
are nondisabled

Allows for special classes or separate schooling only when severity of


the disability prohibits proper education in regular classes with
supplementary aids
