What is IBM Cognos Active Report?

Active Report is a Report Studio report type whose
output is an MHT file
Report consumers can view and interact with an
active report data without hitting the database

2010 IBM Corporation

MHT files are archived HTML files. MHT files also include the data and images that
are available at runtime in addition to JavaScript, which enables the interactivity.
Since MHT files contain all the report data within the file, a report consumer does not
need to hit the database to view or interact with their report. Consumers can explore
the report by resubmitting different prompt values and rendering new data output.
Since the data is all bundled in the report at creation time, when prompts are resubmitted the data is rendered without going back to the database.

Examine Active Report Controls

When you create an active report type,
there are controls available for use in
the mht file format.
Controls can be of two types:

static

data driven
Active report
controls on the
Toolbox tab

2010 IBM Corporation

Many active report controls are either static or data driven. Static controls allow you to
manually define variables. Data driven controls have values that are determined by the
associated data item.

Describe Active Report Variables

Active report variables work with controls to add
interactivity and control behavior in reports.

variable

2010 IBM Corporation

Through the use of variables, you can define the behavior of controls and other report
objects. You can specify a control's selection behavior or reaction behavior.
Selection Behavior: upon selection of the control, the value of the active report variable
is set to the control selection value
Reaction Behavior: upon selection in one control, the active report variable specifies
how another control will react.
Reaction behavior can be of three types:
select an item in a control
filter an item in a control
enable a control

Language Support in Controls

Create variables that support multiple language
When the report is run in that language, all text will
appear as translated

2010 IBM Corporation

If you want the active report to be viewed in different languages, you will have to
supply the translated text for any text you create in static controls.

Demo 1: Create a Simple Active Report Using Static and Data

Controls
Purpose:
You want to create a simple active report using static and data
controls. To do this, your report will use data controls to filter a list
on regions. You will add an order method filter using a static
control so that you can name labels using words that the report
consumers use in their business.
Task 1. Create an active report with a list.
1. Start your browser, in the address box, type
http://<servername>:88/ibmcognos, and then press Enter.
2. On the Log on screen, in the User ID box, type brettonf, in the Password
box, type Education1!, and then click OK.
3. On the Welcome page, click Author advanced reports, and then on the
Select a package page, click Samples/Models/GO Sales (analysis).
4. Click Create new, click Active Report, and then click OK.
The template for an interactive report appears in the work area. A header
appears at the top with a title box, and a footer containing date and time
number information appears at the bottom.
5. From the Toolbox tab, drag a List to the report area.

6. From the Source tab, expand the Sales (analysis) folder, Sales staff
dimension, Sales staff hierarchy, and then drag Country and City level to the
list.
7. Expand Sales measure, and then drag Revenue and Margin to the list.
Task 2. Add a control to filter on regions.
You will add a data button bar to filter the list on Sales regions data item.
1. In the Insertable Objects pane, click Toolbox tab.
2. Drag a Table to the left of the list and clear the Maximize width check box.
3. Click OK.
4. Right-click in the toolbox pane, and then click Active Report Toolbox Items.
Only the Active Report Controls appear in the toolbox.
5. Drag a Data Button Bar object into the left table cell.
6. On the Source tab, under Sales staff hierarchy, drag Sales region to the
button bar drop zone

You want to create a connection between the data button bar and the list so
that as the user clicks a sales region button, the list will filter the data on that
sales region only.
7. Beside the data button bar control, click Interactive Behavior

8. Click Create a New Connection.

Since there are only two objects in the report, this connection is pre-populated
with the correct values to make the connection. On the left is the data button
bar object. In the center is the connection method between the two objects,
which is a filter. On the right is the list object. In the bottom right, Copy Data
Item from Source will add the data item column to the list as hidden. Once this
connection is made, the data button bar selection will filter the list object
through the use of a variable. You will rename the variable.

Choose Proper Controls for use in Data Decks

Use single select controls.

Complex logic is required to display the card.

Single select controls, such as drop-down lists, radio buttons, button bars, and so on,
will result in a maximum number of cards being generated on a deck that is manageable
to display.
With multi-select controls, such as a check box control, the different combinations of
that data that can result in a card are 2 to the power of n, where n=the number of
values in the data item used in the data control.
The logic required to display the different combinations of card data is very difficult to
create with the AND, OR, NOT.

ACTIVE

REPORTS

Task 6. Add a pie chart to the report and control its display
with a deck.
You can create static charts in a report. You cannot have charts filter on the
client as you can with lists and crosstabs.
For active reports, you need to take a different approach and segment the data
to match the filter criteria. This is done through the use of decks. The concept
is similar to a deck of cards, where each card contains info tied to different data.
1. From the Toolbox tab, drag a Table to the left of the list, and accept the
defaults.
Note: Right click in the Toolbox and select All Toolbox Items.
2. Select the list and drag it into the left table cell.
3. From the Toolbox tab, drag a Data Deck into the right table cell.
You want to create a chart (card) for each Product line/Year combination. To
do this, you will add Product line and Year to the deck.
4. Right-click the data deck, click Go to Query, and then rename Query1 to
DataDeck1.
5. Point to Page Explorer, and then click Page1 to return to the report layout.
6. From the Source tab, expand Sales and Marketing (query), Sales (query),
and add the following to the Values drop zone of the deck:
Products -> Product line
Time -> Year
Now you will add a chart to the deck.

You will add filters to the chart to match the filters in the list. Then you will
define a master-detail relationship between the deck (master) and the chart
(detail) so that as a user filters the data using the controls, the list will be filtered
and the corresponding card containing the filtered chart will also appear.
1. Click the chart, on the toolbar, click Filters, and then click Edit Filters.

Workshop 1: Create an Active Report with Cascading Controls

and a List
As the BI report author, you have been asked to create an active report that shows
revenue and planned revenue for each sales person in the chosen geographical area.
You will need to give the user the ability to select which geographical area they want to
view.
To accomplish this:
Add a table containing:
3 data drop-down lists: Sales region, Country, Province-State
List: City, Staff name, Revenue, Planned revenue
Filter on Year = '2006'
Group on City, Sort on Staff name
Cascade all three data drop-down lists
Have each data-drop down list filter the list
Add a Clustered Line chart to the list
Revenue to Measures
Month to Categories
Create Master-Detail Relationship on Staff name
Sort on Month (numeric)
Filter on Year = '2006'
Hide all list columns on the condition that the Country variable is not
empty
For more detailed information outlined as tasks, see the Task Table section.
For the final results, see the Workshop Results section that follows the Task Table
section.

sales teams. The report will contain two tabs: the first will be an overview of Sales in
Australia; the second will focus on geographical market sales.
For more detailed information outlined as tasks, see the Task Table section.
For the final query results, see the Workshop Results section that follows the Task
