Final Project

This document describes the design of a ball fixture created for an ITCD 301 Tool Design course. It includes 16 figures showing the various components of the ball fixture from different views. The fixture is designed to securely hold a cast alloy steel sphere with a 2.5 inch radius in place while it is drilled. It consists of a bottom fixture, top fixture with integrated drill guide jig, and removable restricting pins to secure the sphere during drilling. A rubber stopper is also included to prevent the sphere from spinning during the drilling process.

Figure 1 Work piece: Sphere

Figure 1 is going to be made from Cast Alloy Steel, with a Radius of 2.50.

Figure 2 Bottom of Fixture:

Figure 2 is made from Cast Alloy Steel with a radius of 2.50 cut, 8 inch Wx 8 inch L x
3 inch H(Without restricting pins in place.)

Figure 3 Bottom of Fixture:

Figure 3 is the same as Figure 2 only Figure 3 shows restricting pins in place. Also it
is to be noted that the restricting pins are a separate piece from that of the bottom
of the fixture.
Figure 4 Top of Fixture:

Figure 4 is also made from Cast Alloy 8 Inch W x 8 Inch L x 4 Inch H. Included on top
as well is a jig in order to guide the drill into the sphere. (Stopper hole isnt visible in
this isometric view.)

Figure 5 Top of Fixture Bottom View:

Figure 5 In this view which is the same part from Figure 4, although this shows a
bottom view where the stopper hole is clearly visible.

Figure 6 Rubber stopper:

Figure 6 shows a rubber, 2 inch diameter stopper inserted in a 2 inch diameter hole
in the fixtures back side, in order to prevent torque from drill from spinning the
sphere inside of the fixture.

Figure 7 Assembled fixture with sphere in place:

Figure 7 shows assembly with restricting pins removed and rubber stopper in place

Figure 8 Completed fixture

Figure 8 shows full assembly with sphere in place and restricting pins in place.

Figure 9 Front View Complete Assembly

Figure 9 shows the fixture for the sphere, with the sphere in place.

Figure 10 right side view complete assembly

Figure 10 shows the complete fixture with the sphere in place from the right view.

Figure 11 back view complete assembly

Figure 11 shows the complete fixture with the ball in place, from the back view. Here
we can clearly see the stopper in place as well.

Figure 12 top view complete assembly

Figure 12 shows the complete fixture with ball in place from the top view. Here you
can see the stopper, and the jig looking down from the top.
Figure 13 Fixture Isometric View

Figure 13 shows the isometric view of the fixture without the sphere in place.
Figure 14 Front View (Without sphere)

Figure 14 shows the fixture without the sphere, and the restricting pins. You can also
see the stopper in the center back.

Figure 15 front view (Without restricting pins in place)

Figure 15 shows fixture of fixture without sphere, notice how easy it is for the
sphere to simply slide into place without the restricting pins.
Figure 16 Top View (Without Sphere)

Figure 16 shows the fixture without the sphere in place, notice how we can see
clearly through the jig to the bottom of the bottom fixture.
