Assessment 2

Students reflect on school experiences demonstrating an understanding of the function and characteristics of an educational institution in the UAE. The document discusses three principles of student-centered learning: encouraging positive student behavior through clear expectations and praise; managing classroom routines and transitions to keep students organized and independent; and performing the roles and duties of a teacher through lesson planning, evaluation, and using various learning styles. The author reflects on their teaching experiences and how they have implemented these principles, and ways they could improve, such as using technology for attendance instead of paper cards.

Introduction: In this report I will be talking about three student-centered
principles that are: encouraging positive student behavior, Managing
1

classroom routines and transitions and the teacher roles and responsibilities.
I am going to reflect on my experience in my teaching practice for my first
and second semester.

Encouraging positive student behavior.

Explain: Encouraging positive behaviour needs a good relationship between
the teacher and the students. A teacher should encourage students to be
cooperative and quiet. The classroom climate should be comfortable for the
students. A routine helps in having positive behaviour from the students. A
teacher can only influence students behaviour.
Example: In the morning when the students enter the classroom the teacher
greets them with a smiley face. She compliments their hair style or their new
shoes.
In the circle time, she tells the students what is expected of them to do for
this day. She asks them to suggest the place of their picnic or activities they
would like. When students are working hard on an activity she praises
excellent students and shows their work to their classmates. She also
encourages the other students to work hard.
If a student is not listening, he have (timeout) off the mat for two minutes.
She tells him about the bad behavior he did and that he should not repeat it
again.
Reflect: I like how the teacher gives the priority for the students to choose
what they like. The teachers positive actions and attitudes influence the
students. She gives them clear expectations of what is needed from them,
she only guides them to achieve their aim. But if I were a teacher, I would
have the reciprocal punishment concept. I will make students choose the
consequences for bad behaviors.

Managing classroom routines and transitions.

Explain: Routines help children feel stable, and it divides the responsibility
in the classroom between the teacher, the assistant, and the students.
Working load becomes
less on the teacher when
the students are got used
to a routine. A Transition
helps in managing time
and organizing students
movement. It makes
children more
independent, but it needs
guidance and practice.
Example: In my teaching
play in the centres in the
oclock, they put music,

students clean up the
mat. The teacher draws

the daily routine on the board, and she explains it. She asks them about the
places they would like to have picnics in or which
activities
would they like to do. They transition by singing, Lining

up
or calling names. When she asks them to line up in up.
the
corridor, they know that they should line up and
then
sit
down on the floor until she comes and tells them to
move.
Reflect: I like how the teacher gives the student a
detailed
daily routine, and they have the choice to choose
some parts
of it. Students become more independent, and they
can work
on their own when the teacher gives them
instructions. I would use transitioning with music in
the future
because it gives students time to finish up their work and sit on the mat.

Performing the roles and duties of a teacher.

Explain: The role of the teacher is her believes, attitudes, morals with her
students. A teacher believes she should: Encourage and support her
students, Smile and be respectful, Use different learning styles and
Strengthen weaknesses of her students. Teachers duties are the tasks and
work that she has to do, Such as: Knowing the content, evaluating
students, planning lessons and creating timetables and activities.
Example: In my teaching practice last year the attendance was
taken by the students. The teacher created cards, and she made
them decorate it, and then she laminated them and handed the
cards to the students to cut them out. She got the materials for the
students, and they decorated the board. She told them that they
need to put in their names as soon as they enter the
classroom.
Taking

work and she just provided the materials for them. But I
think that instead of making cards and putting them on
the board, I can integrate technology. I can put a tablet near the
door and whenever a student comes in he signs his attendance
by clicking on a character that represents his identity in a
program and that marks him as a present.
Conclusion: Student-centred learning is very helpful for teachers and
students, and it has a variety of methods that can be used. To encourage
positive students behaviour a teacher should use routines and transitions,
she should also perform her duties and roles with more effort to have a
smooth student centred classroom.
