Rational:

The concept of print is a necessary skill to develop it for beginner

reader for the purpose of the development of literacy. It clearly showed
the ability of the reader to understand how the book works and used.
According to the report in sagepub web, they viewed the concepts of
print as basic knowledge about how print in general, and books work".
(Shanahan & Lonigan, 2010) Concepts of prints must be taught for
beginner reader because it is included vital concepts which have an
effective role in developing the literacy of the child to be a successful
reader. According to Clay, who mentioned that teachers must teach the
concept of prints for children, to become knowledgeable about these
essential concepts, so they open doors to literacy. (Clay, 2000)
Below is explained the impact of each concept in developing the
literacy of the child.
Orientation
The child will learn how to hold the book and recognize the front from
the back, learn how to turn pages, and that print text is carrying a
message not the illustration and so on. Hence, he will become familiar
to use a different kind of books independently. On the other hand, in
writing, the child will be able to make a story have cover from front and
back, including the title and author name because he exposed to the
orientation of the book through reading. As a teacher is necessary to
assess this concept, because it showed if the child remembers the
correct way of holding and handle a book, that he learned through
reading. According to Stewart who point out that assessing children
allow the teacher to observe young children attending to the features
of print and discovering the rules of order and sequence for books.
(Stewart, 2016)
Directionality
The child will learn to read written text from left to right and from top
to bottom on the page, and using finger to point under the written text
from left to right as he reading. Consequently, the child understands
how the text is move and work and applies this knowledge in his
writing. According to KG 12 reader web who mentioned that Reading
helps children learn text structures and language that they can then
transfer to their own writing. ("The relationship between reading and
writing", 2008) It is very necessary to assess this concept because it
showed if the child can distinguish between the languages he learned
in the school. For example, students in UAE learn Arabic and English in
the school, and the directionality of text is different and confused the

students because in the Arabic language the text begins from right to
left.

Concept of Punctuation, letters and words and punctuation mark

With punctuation concept, the child will be able to recognize basic
punctuation marks, name them and their purpose in the text. While with
letter concepts he will be able to identify the letter names, match upper
and lowercase, that the first of sentences start with a capital letter, and
the order of letters and words are critical especially when the child trying
to read and write because it is the foundation to learn the reading.
According to Clay, who pointed out that the order of letters and words is of
vital importance when children are trying to read and write. (Clay, 2000)
Even as through a lot of exposing to this concept the child will be able to
identify and form the letters in his handwriting, remembering the spelling
of the letters, make his own story because he understand that the story
built from words.

To conclude, it is necessary to assess concept of prints because it

measures the amount of knowledge that the child has, and help the teacher
to know what the child is attending to in concept and what he still need to
be learned. For example, if the child aware of the letter sounds but he
cannot read the words, the teacher will support the child to develop his
knowledge and understand that letter in prints come together to represent
sounds in words through exposing the child to the print in environment.
