Dear 4th grade Parents;

During the course of this school year your student will be engaging in many
different educational activities. With the mass amounts of technology usage, we will be
exploring different ways technology should be used to promote learning and what it is to
be a responsible digital citizen. Your child will learn internet safety, including; chat safety,
social media safety, appropriate posting, appropriate searching and much more. One of
our key assignments this year will be to blog with students in our class about our big
light bulbs or questions we may still have after a lesson.
As a parent myself, I am sure you all have concerns about what exactly my child
will be doing with technology, how much time will be spent using technology, what
learning is taking place, and why are you not spending the day teaching my child. I
would have these questions also, so I am going to try to answer them all for you.
One of our primary focuses will be blogging. We will use the schools blogging
page that has been set up for each classroom. The students can access this from home
or school as long as they know their passwords and identification numbers. This page
cannot be viewed by anyone that is not enrolled in the class, and all posts are
monitored carefully. You, as a parent are encouraged to ask your student to pull up the
blog and follow along with topics of learning. This is a safe and secure environment
where the students will practice their writing skills in addition to having questions
answered for them if they get stuck on something.
Blogging will enhance your students learning, and create a new engaging way to
share their stories by responding or creating blogs. The expectations of the blogs will
include using our best writing skills and to use this as a journal for daily learning. If you
would like to see your students blog and do not have access at home, you are welcome
to schedule an appointment and come in and use a school computer to view the blog. I
would recommend that your student be with you so that they can log in and show you
themselves, this excites the students to share their work.
In addition to blogging, on the blogging page I will post homework help tips and
any homework that has been assigned, so if your student forgets they can access this
information from any computer as long as they have their log in information. We will also
use the blog to share documents we are proud of. This will be the students choice if
they want their work to be displayed for their classmates. Because all of this work will be
done in the schools domain, it cannot be viewed by others. This helps to keep your
student safe.
The first few weeks of school, your child will only be permitted to blog about
specific topics that I assign. This is so that as a class we can learn how to post
appropriate information and how to respond in a respectful manner, even when we do
not agree with a classmate. Teaching the students how to use manners while learning
technology will be a priority and a skill that will follow them through life.

Standards that will definitely be addressed using technology can be found on

the Common Core Website. http://www.corestandards.org/ . ISTE also has
technology standards which we are implanting into the schools curriculum,
alongside Common Core. The weblink is http://www.iste.org/STANDARDS . A
few of the standards we will be meeting with blogging specifically are listed
below:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.1.A
Introduce a topic or text clearly, state an opinion, and create an organizational structure
in which related ideas are grouped to support the writer's purpose.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.1.B
Provide reasons that are supported by facts and details.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.1.C
Link opinion and reasons using words and phrases (e.g., for instance, in order to, in
addition).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.4.2.D
Use precise language and domain-specific vocabulary to inform about or explain the
topic.
ISTE Standards:
Communication and collaboration: Students use digital media and environments to
communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual
learning and contribute to the learning of others.
If you would like to further research information on blogging or other technology
use in the classroom, you are welcome to, I have also included two references from
other teachers who have found great value in blogging. As always, if you have any
questions, concerns, or would like to come watch us learning and using technology,
please let me know and we can schedule a time that works.
I am attaching a permission slip which needs to be returned if you choose to
have your student participate in the blogging portion of our lessons. If you decide to
decline, your student will participate in group discussions in class and respond to topics
and learning using paper/pencil. Please consider blogging for your students learning
success.
Sincerely,

Ms. Kindsvater
