Professional Activity Number Two

I attended the 4th annual interprofessional rural health professions conference from 8am to 12pm at the Duval auditorium at Banner-University Medical Center. The keynote speaker, Roberto Dansie, shared his wisdom on native populations through storytelling. As someone with a Yaqui heritage, I found the conference meaningful as it provided insight into preserving traditions that have developed over thousands of years. I would recommend this experience for future students to gain understanding of native cultures beyond typical lectures, as the storytelling approach taught viewpoints ranging from childrearing to herbal medicine.

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):
I attended the 4th annual interprofessional rural health professions conference. The
purpose of the conference was for keynote speaker Roberto Dansie to impart his wisdom of
native populations to the audience. Poster presentations from DNP students where included. My
role was an audience member.
Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
The conference was held in Duval auditorium at Banner-University Medical
Center. The length of the conference was from 9am to 4pm. I attended the keynote speak portion
and poster presentations from DNP students from 8am to 12pm.
Discuss the value of this experience to you.
I enjoyed this experience because it was not what I was expecting. I expected to
be lectured on how various aspects of the rural population, but the reality of the conference was
different. Through story telling Roberto Densie described various aspects of native culture. My
wife and daughter are Yaqui so the conference was meaningful. My wife and I are constantly
looking for new ways to integrate traditional culture into our lives for our daughter because it is
hard to grow up proud of a culture that is in its present condition like the way the Yaqui culture is
here in Tucson. It was great to see someone speak of bringing back and preserving a tradition
that has developed over thousands of years.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not?
I recommend this professional experience for future students because of the
understanding gained on the lives of native cultures. It was so much more than an understanding
gained. It was an experience that taught with storytelling viewpoints of native cultures ranging
from raising children to the use of herbs.
