Lesson Plan Reflection

I created a lesson plan for a high school lifetime fitness class since that is the subject and
grade level that I am going into. To create a lesson plan there are a lot of aspects to think about
when it comes to choosing what to teach, how you will teach it, and what you want to students to
gain from the lesson. As a teacher it is important to address a Utah Core Standard, select/create
an applicable subject, and teach it in a way that is clear and engaging. With those building blocks
I was able to put together an effective lesson that my future classroom can really learn from.
When addressing a Utah core standard you really want to choose a lesson that covers the
standard in its entirety and what I found was that when you did that you were able to cover a few
more standards. The standards all really tie in with each other so if you have an effective lesson
you can meet multiple core standards and your students are learning more effectively. In my
create your own work out lesson plan the two core standards that I achieved that I thought were
most important were Standard FFL.1.4 Demonstrate competency in two or more specialized
activities that promote health-related fitness, and Standard FFL.2.2 Create a practice plan to
improve performance in fitness activities. These really would engage my students and show their
competency and would reflect back to myself as a teacher and if I have been effective in these
standards or not.
These standards were great in helping me create my lesson plan. When it came down to
creating my lesson plan I had to think about what would be a fun and engaging way to test and
reinforce a lifetime fitness classes knowledge about fitness. When I did my service learning at
West Jordan High my teacher would go through workouts with students and they got to work out
but how do we know if theyre retaining the workouts? My mentor teacher showed me an
activity she said her students loved. They each had a body part (shoulder, back, leg etc.) and

would have to draw a picture and name all the muscles in that body part then they would list a
few work outs that would work the different muscles in the body part. She told me it took two
class periods then the students presented their posters. I didnt get to see this plan in action but
she showed me some posters and said that it showed that they were actually learning and
showing what they knew about fitness while getting to have fun coloring and socializing with
other classmates. This also helped me when putting together my lesson plan because it allowed
the students to be creative while still using their fitness knowledge.
I didnt get a chance to teach this lesson but I learned a few things when teaching to the
6th grade classroom I did service learning at as well as what I continue to learn teaching at my
tumbling studio. It is important to be as clear as possible while teaching and ask questions often
to reassure the students of the lesson instructions. When they get group time I want to make sure
to pay attention and not make the time too long (depending on the assignment) because students
could get off task. I would do checkpoints (make everyone report to me how far they are, ask
questions etc) to keep control of the classroom. When I taught a health lesson to the 6th grade
classroom I noticed their volume got louder the longer their discussion time was. Being
professional makes a huge difference too because if you get too goofy or not seem not sure of
what youre doing you lose your class.
The lesson plan and service learning helped me to better some teaching practices as well
as expose me to new classroom situations. I need to always be prepared when it comes to lesson
planning and always establish a caring professional environment in my classroom. If I follow
through with these goals I can be an effective teacher and my students can succeed in their
endeavors.

Philosophy Of Education
My teaching philosophy is Perennialism and Progressivism. When I took the little test in
the book I scored 17 for perennialism and 14 for progressivism. These education philosophies are
what fit me best as a teacher and will affect what I will study, how I teach what Ive learned and
give my students a different quality of learning.
The perennial philosophy suggests that nature (including human nature) is constant and
schools should teach content and topics that have been around for as long as we have been
learning/teaching those (Kauchak & Eggen, 2010, 154). This philosophy also includes a rigorous
curriculum in all subjects so that education can provide a solid foundation that will prepare them
for their future. Keyword is future, the lessons they are learning can apply to their present lives
but the purpose is for preparing for future endeavors like the third grade, high school or college.
The progressivism philosophy promotes real world problem solving and individual
development; developing students as completely as possible physically, emotionally,
intellectually, and socially (Kauchak & Eggen 157). This emphasizes teachers being caring
individuals who teach with questioning and discussion as well as lecture to help students expand
their learning.
Reading about all the philosophies these two I couldnt agree with more they reflect how
and what I want to teach in my future classroom. I am torn between elementary and secondary. I
like older kids because they are able to learn and discuss more and intellectually expand in
critical subjects. I am doing my student learning with a 6th grade teacher right now and I am
seeing how sixth graders react to the subjects she teaches and how they respond to difficult
subjects. If I go into secondary teaching I will become a physical education teacher because that

is an important subject I am passionate about. Its a subject that has so much room for learning
that I think gets missed. I want to teach students about all the ways they can take care of their
body and have they see what different foods or exercises affect their bodies and allow them to
expand their knowledge about their health and apply it to their daily lives.
Becoming a high school teacher would make me want to get a math endorsement as well.
I really enjoy math and love how it involves critical thinking and how different methods all still
come to one answer. This logical thought should be pushed and students need to have a better
attitude and approach to math because it is essential knowledge that they can apply all the way
through college and beyond depending on their profession it is a subject that prepares for their
future. These all further prove my philosophies for teaching.
In the text book for EDU 1010 I loved how they had an example of how after the students
read, The Scarlet Letter (1850) the teacher held a discussion of what was good and evil and how
if applied in the book who truly was evil? Then applied it to real world issues right now and how
the students can better understand repression and how to change it within themselves or be
prepared for it. This is what I would want to do when teaching with a perennial philosophy.
When preparing the students for their problem solving of the outside world I would hold
discussions about what our bodies can do and in different situations what should they do
concerning their health and wellbeing. (Following along with being a PE teacher)
These are philosophies that I will go by in my classroom. I want to provide a caring and
fun environment where students can learn and discuss problems and issues and how to solve
them but still push them to challenge themselves and overcome rigorous subjects.

Classroom Management
Classroom Management
Classroom management is a big piece to creating a productive learning environment.
Classroom management is very important when and these are my strategies on how to encourage
learning and responsibility as well as how to organize a classroom. Involving parents is also
important to having a positive learning environment and when and how to use punishment.
My philosophy for classroom management will echo my teaching philosophy (that being
perennialism and progressivism. I want to have a classroom that encourages them to study hard
and learn about the lessons and prepare for their futures. I want to give my students opportunities
to develop physically, emotionally and intellectually in my classroom.
A productive learning environment is a classroom that is safe and orderly and focused on
learning (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, 308). Sounds simple enough? Then you factor in kids and a
teacher and the variables change but the outcome needs to stay the same. I will clearly set my
expectations so that the students can be responsible for their actions and consequences. These
expectations would be reiterated weekly as well as posted on my teaching blog, displayed in the
classroom, and communicated to the parents (whether email, phone or conferences).
At my tumbling studio we use the saying, firm but kind this helps remind me as a
teacher not to yell but when things need to be addressed I am firm in what I am saying and
address it immediately so that no one gets hurt. Same can be used in the classroom I will be firm
in my expectations and rules. If the students know that I am not going to waiver they are more
likely to not take advantage of things and we can respect each other. Firm but kind is something

Id like to teach them as well because it is a saying that can be applied to all kinds of situations.
This can help them problem solve in real situations and develop as a person.
When it comes to punishment I will fall back on my classroom expectations so that they
know personally that they have acted disrespectfully and then we can come to a solution
together. I want to show that I care because I know that I will and students can sense that and
will give positive energy back. A caring teacher is at the heart of a productive learning
environment (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, 314). If punishment is used, then an increase of love is
used after to show that I am still cheering them on. If the act is bad enough I will use think
time but not for a whole class period. In should be in class right away rather than detention after
school because they forget exactly what they did wrong and why they are in detention and
probably wont even go.
Classroom organization will help with a productive learning environment because if the
teacher isnt organized the class wont run smoothly. Plus that would be one of my expectations
in my classroom; for students to keep their assignments organized and turned in on time. If I am
expecting my students to follow that rule I need to as well and be an example. My classroom will
strive to be organized by preparing materials in advance, starting class on time, and creating well
established routines. I can prevent some problems this way and the students will have a positive
learning experience. (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, 316).
To encourage parental involvement my mentor teacher had a blog and added all the
parents to it. She would post assignments that were being sent home and when they were due,
activities coming up, and other important things. She also sent out emails monthly and
encouraged parents to call and come after school if something needed to be addressed. She had

great communication with the parents; even if they didnt read the blog she had done her part in
communicating. I like that idea and once I start teaching I will work that into my agenda because
I believe parent involvement is important in student success. (Kauchak & Eggen, 2014, 321).
In my classroom I will set rules and expectations and always be firmly consistent. This
includes when I am addressing good or bad behavior. I will be organized and encourage my
students to be the same. When teaching I will have them all turned towards where I am teaching
so that there is a smaller chance of distraction. I will set and follow a clear routine so that they
know what to do and can be responsible for following it. Most importantly I am going to care
and work with my students and make them feel important so they can continue to learn and want
to go to college.

Portfolio Reflection
What an important course Education 1010 is. I am so glad I took this
class! Throughout this semester I had learned that there is a lot more to
teaching than teaching a class every day. I discovered that my teaching
philosophies are perennialism and progressivism. I also made the connection
between my teaching philosophies and how it influenced me when I gave my
lesson and what I noticed most while observing classrooms during student
learning. Speaking of service learning I was able to participate in 20 hours of
service learning with two different teachers that really added more to my
teaching perspective.
For my service learning I went to two different teachers for two
different grades. I observed a 6th grade class and a high school class. This is
essential for anyone wanting to become a teacher. I thought I knew what a
classroom was like but boy it is so much different when you actually go in
and watch from the teachers desk. The students are all so different and you
have to think of ways to manage, assess, teach, and engage so many
different students. Both my mentor teachers gave me a lot of different
insight and strategies that helped shape my own classroom techniques. I
wouldnt have those if it werent for my hours doing service learning.
When it came the day to perform my teaching demonstration I had to
put what I have observed and what I have strategized to the test. As I was
teaching I was learning because I was teaching by my philosophies and

managing the class the way I had prepared and was paying attention to the
feedback I was getting. Doing this makes it so that I could improve my
teaching strategies and become more effective in my teaching.
My field experience really cleared up a lot of questions and
assumptions I had about teachers and teaching. Before doing my service
learning I assumed teachers were at the school all hours of the night and had
so many bad kids to deal with because the books prepare for all the things
that could go wrong. I believed that all parents would be on board and would
communicate so that their students would succeed. I learned that these are
not all that comes when teaching. Teachers have hard things to overcome
but the job is so rewarding and it was so positive to see the students really
respecting and caring about their teacher just as much as my mentor
teachers cared about them.
As I stated before EDU1010 is an essential course to becoming a
teaching professional. It exposes you to so much of the behind the scenes of
being a teacher. I was tested on my teaching demonstrations and lesson
planning skills and got to educate myself on multiple strategies to use in my
classroom. As long as I continue to practice these skills and sticking to my
plans I am on the road to becoming a effective teacher for my future
classrooms.
