Name: Erin Rabenberg
Grade Level: 2nd
School: Chester Elementary
Date: April 20, 2016
Time: 2:00-2:30
Reflection: Hitting the ball on to the net was challenging for most of the students. They could not keep it going and
this frustrated them. Next time I would just have them throw the ball at the net instead of trying to hit or spike the
ball.

Contextual Factors/ Learner Characteristics: The second grade is one of two grades in the elementary that is split
into two sections. In the section that meets from 2:00-2:30 Monday, Wednesday, and every other Friday there are 19
students. There are 7 males and 12 females. All students in the class are Caucasian. The class is a skilled group of
students who enjoy physical activity and competing. The students start each class by running 3-5 laps, depending of
the number the teacher gives them at the door, and then they sit in the center circle until everyone has finished. The
students sit until the teacher instructs them as to what to do next. If the weather is good enough the class will go
outside for the activity.

The Lesson
1. Introduction
Getting attention
Relating to past experience and/or knowledge
Creating a need to know
Sharing objective, in general terms

I will ask the students if they have ever heard/seen/or played Spikeball. I will explain that it is a new game that
the high schoolers have been playing and that they have really enjoyed it and I think that they will like it too. It
is a cross between 4 square and volleyball. (5 min)
2. Content Delivery (include time allotment & instructional methodologies)
When the students are done running three laps they will sit in the middle circle. While the students are still seated I
will explain the rules of the game. The game is played 2 v 2. There are no boundaries any player can go wherever
they want to hit the ball. Each team has three hits just like in volleyball before they have to hit the net. The team
does not have to use all three of their hits. Hitting the net is like sending the ball over the net in volleyball it is a
change in possession. Then the other team has three hit to hit the net. Teams score points when the other team lets
the ball hit the ground or if the ball bounces on the net more than once. Each point starts with a serve and that is
what we will work on today. There are only three nets so some groups will use hula hoops to practice but we will
rotate.
To start you will stand 5 ft. back and throw the ball at the net/hoop just practicing hitting the
target. Take turns with everyone in your group. 5 min
Next you will throw the ball up and serve the ball at the target. Teacher will demonstrate. 5 min
The students will be split between the three nets. There will be two lines across from each other
on the nets. The first person in line will hit the ball on the net to the other line. Each group will
see how many times they can hit the ball without making a mistake. 5 min
3. Closure (5 min)
The teacher will yell freeze and then ask the students to place the balls on the nets and line up. While the students
are in line the teacher will ask the students what they liked best about Spikeball and what the most challenging thing
about Spikeball was.

Technology Integration:
Assessments Used: Observation/Questions
Differentiated Instruction: Students who are struggling hitting the nets will move to a hula hoop.
