Classification and Characteristics of Mapleson Circuits

Mapleson circuits are classified based on their configuration and required fresh gas flows during spontaneous and controlled ventilation. Class A circuits require very high fresh gas flows that are difficult to predict during controlled ventilation. Class B and C circuits require 2-2.5 times the minute ventilation in fresh gas flow for both spontaneous and controlled ventilation. Class D circuits require 2-3 times minute ventilation for spontaneous ventilation and 1-2 times for controlled ventilation. Class E circuits require 2-3 times minute ventilation for spontaneous ventilation and 3 times for controlled ventilation with an I:E ratio of 1:2.
