Classroom Management Plan

Attention Getting Signal

In my classroom we will use a variety of attention getting
signals. In the very beginning of the year we will practice
or signals multiple times. Some of our signals will include
a lights off hands up, or bell ringing and freeze. I also like
to use clap patterns or calling out clap twice, clap three
times, etc. I will have quarterly call and response
attention getters with my classroom. As a class, we can
vote on our favorites. For example, teacher says class,
class responds, yes? One of my newly learned signals is
called make ten, or make____. I have seen this to be
extremely effective in my current classroom. Make ten is
used when a teacher holds up a number on his/her
fingers and the students must look, then add, multiply or
subtract to make ten. It can be changed to any number
for any grade level. For example, you might have your
students make 42, or 15, while you hold up one of the
multiples. Using this method requires students to quiet
down to think of the other. Make ten is fun, requires eyes,
ears and using their brain! One important aspect of
attention getting signals is that the teacher does not
move on until the attention getting signal actually works.
The teacher must have all the students attention before
making his or her announcement.
Seating Arrangements
Depending on the classroom I get, I will either have
students arranged at their individual desks in groups of 4,
or have the students at tables in groups of four or five. To
the best of my ability I will have every student facing the
board that is most often used. Students will have a
communal basket of supplies at their table groups, and

have a seat pack on the back of their chair for their books
and other individual belongings.
Collecting Papers
Students will turn in their completed work to the in
basket. At each desk, or in the corner of each seat at a
table group will be little colored dots (red, yellow, blue,
orange), each student will have a colored dot. The
teacher will call all the blues, or reds to collect the papers
and turn them in. Sometimes a whole table will be called
up to turn in their papers. Homework will be handed in at
the beginning of the school day on Friday morning as
students file in.
Handing out Papers
Often papers will be handed out by myself, or by my
teachers helper. Papers will be passed out as students
are dismissed from the rug to their seats. Paper passer
will not pass out individually, but by tables to be time
friendly. I also plan on handing out papers to them at
their tables depending on the circumstance. Students
might also be dismissed from the rug in their rows (5 or 6
students at a time), to go pick up papers themselves that
might be stacked on a table, counter, etc. Depending on
the activity, students may be handed out papers in
different ways.
Using the Restroom
Hand signals will be used for students who need to go to
the bathroom, get a tissue, or sharpen their pencil. I dont
think that students carrying a pass to the bathroom is a
very sanitary idea. I plan on having my students use a
clothespin to clip to the bottom of their shirt. Clothespins
will be distinct colors for boys or girls bathroom passes. I

may also have students wear a lanyard necklace with the

pass on it. Students will need to put the bathroom
placeholder at their seats so that I know where they
are. Students will be asked to not use the bathroom
within 30 minutes of their morning recess time, or within
30 minutes of returning from lunch.
Sharpening Pencils
I will not have a pencil sharpener that is accessible to
students. We will have a dull/sharp jar that all students
can use to turn in dull pencils or get a sharp one. I will
sharpen the pencils at the end of each week. Students
will be allowed to buy their own pencil sharpeners or use
mechanical pencils as well.
Late Work/Homework
Homework will be accepted for full credit up to a week
late, and for 50% anytime after that. I will have a lenient
homework policy because I want to encourage kids to do
their homework even if it might be hard at home to get
the help to do it in the given time frame. However, if
students do not turn in their homework when it is due on
Friday, they will be required to write and sign their name
on the no homework sheet and write their reason for
not having it. I will install this policy so that kids are being
held responsible for their excuse/reason, and so that I
have knowledge of possible situations that might be
going on at home. I will explain my expectations to the
students in a letter read at the beginning of the year.
Students will take home this letter and sign it with their
parents. In regards to classwork, if needed, unfinished
classwork will be given one extra day to be taken home
and finished for full credit, (if student was on task the
whole time). If the student was observed being off task,

they will have the option to turn in what they have, or to

work on it during PART of their recess then turn it in. A
grading scale of 1,2,3 or 4 will be used, and if students
fail to turn classwork in complete on time the day its due
(same day or given 24 hours), a 2 will be given.
Classwork will not be accepted more than one day late
and the student will be given a 1, meaning they were not
on task, and did not do what was asked.
New Students
Being a new student is very hard. If I am getting a new
student, we will do same day ice-breakers or get to know
you games. The new student will be sent home with the
same rules and expectations that were given during the
first week, and will be briefed in the classroom about the
rules. New students will be assigned two buddies to be
their go-to mentors the first week of school. Mentor
buddies will be responsible for helping the student with
any questions he or she may have in class or about the
school, and will also be asked to include the new student
in any games at recess. I will send a letter home
requesting to meet with the parents.

Voice Levels
I plan on using a few methods to control volume in my
classroom. One will be designated voice levels for certain
activities (which can be said or written on the board.
These include the following:
0- Silent time
1- Whispers only (library voice), only one person should
hear you. Used for whispering to the person sitting next
to you.
2- Soft voice, only the people at your table group can
hear you.

3- Is a normal indoor voice, used for asking answering

questions, presenting, or conversation.
4- Loud speaking/yelling. Used only on the playground or
during P.E.
Another method for volume control I will be using is
putting the letters VOICE up on the board. After students
are given the designated voice level, the whole word will
go up. If the volume gets too high, students lose a letter
in the word. If the class loses all the letters, they start
owing minutes of quiet heads down time.
Testing
In order to ensure a productive and monitored testing
environment, I will position myself where I can see all the
students. I will most likely be walking around, but making
sure my back is never turned. Students will also have
privacy folders at their spaces, and books beneath their
seats to read once their paper is turned over. There will
be absolutely no talking. If the student chooses to talk,
they are choosing to break their signed contract and
immediate consequences will be put in place for said
action (refer to rules and consequences).
Entering the Room
Entering and exiting the room will be something we
practice a lot during the first week of school. Students will
not leave the room unless they have a 0 voice level.
Students will come in the same way, and know to look on
the same board everyday for directions about the
morning task. Students will be asked to re-enter the room
if they do not enter correctly.
Nurse
On the first day of school we will go over reasons why we

go to the nurse. We will talk about what the nurse can

and cant do for the students. If determined the student
needs to go, they will be written a nurses pass and will
put the nurse place holder in their seat.
Sub Plans
It is my plan to have a binder for the sub that will start
out giving a very brief explanation about classroom rules
and procedures. It will also include a general weekly
schedule. In the binder there will be names of two or
three students that can help the teacher if need be. The
binder will have worksheets separated by quarters. I will
change these worksheets out as needed. For instance, I
will not put anything we have not covered or mastered in
the binder for that quarter. If possible, I will leave a note
for the sub briefing them on what we are doing that week
for math, reading, etc. Knowing this, they will be able to
pick the appropriate classwork. I will also let the students
know at the beginning of the year that there will be a
small class reward for good behavior while having a sub.
Absent Procedures
I will have an absent hanging wall file where I will put
extra copies of the assignments handed out separated by
the day of the week. It will be the students responsibility
to get the work from the days they were absent. Students
can ask anyone at their table to help clarify anything they
missed if need be. If a student is absent for more than a
week, I will put together a packet of missed work for
them.
Using a Slate/Dry Erase Marker
All materials in the class must be treated with care and
respect, which includes slates and dry erase markers.

Slates will be kept on a particular, organized shelf in the

classroom and students will have their own dry erase
markers in their pencil boxes. If a student misuses the
slate, they will be required to put it away, and do their
work on paper. Students will not be allowed to use the dry
erase boards and markers for anything other than the
designated task. I will send home a letter at the
beginning of the year requesting donations of dry erase
markers, and that each student be provided with one or
two of their own. While using slates, 100% participation
will be required.
Beginning of School Year
On the first day of school I will greet students at the door
with a smile, and ask their name. I plan on doing at least
one get to know me project for the first few days of
school, and many in-class ice breaker games. At recess, I
will take the kids to their designated line-up spot for the
mornings where I will greet and walk them to class. The
whole first week we will focus on coming together as a
community and making sure everyone understands and
agrees with classroom rules and procedures. I will give
the students an opportunity to give input for our
classroom rules and expectations and we will vote on a
few to add to our schools Four Bs. The Bs include, be
responsible, be respectful, be caring and be safe.
Rules and Consequences (positive & negative)
-Roars
At Lineweaver we have a school wide reward system.
We call the reward tickets roars. After a student collects
5 roars (can be given by their teacher, or any other
teacher), he/she can go to the office to get a prize.

Students love going to the office to get a prize.

-Team rewards
Table groups will be able to earn strips of paper to
complete their rainbow (cloud hung above each table
with attached colored strips). When completed, the table
group will receive a group prize. Team rewards could
include a homework pass for each student, extra free
time on Friday, a trip to the goodie box, group chooses
P.E. game, etc.
-Secret/Mystery Student
Each day, a students name will be written on the board
and then covered with a piece of paper. The students will
know that whoever the secret student is, he/she is being
watched for desirable behavior. If the secret student
shows the Four Bs all day and displays good behavior,
the he/she will get a reward. None of the students will
know whose name it is, so all students should be
motivated to be on task.
-Goodie Box
Students at random displaying good behavior will be
invited to take something from the goodie box. Some of
the goodie box treats will be homemade, and will include
things like lunch with the teacher, play a game board
game with a friend, use teachers chair for a day, where
your pajamas to school, skip morning work, read a book
to the class, etc.
-Smart Beads
If a student is observed to be working hard and on
task, teacher will give them smart beads (mardi gras
beads) to wear for the day.

-Whole Class Rewards

Extra recess time, organized game at recess, listen to
music while we work, teacher brings snack, extra
GoNoodle time.
