Number Sense

This document outlines a lesson plan for teaching number sense to kindergarten students. The lesson plan follows the engagement, exploration, explanation, elaboration, and evaluation (E3) framework. For the engage section, the teacher will start with a numbers song and identify number names. In the explore section, students will count items and compare amounts in small groups. They will then explain their answers to the class. Next, in elaboration, students will compare number of pets at home. Finally, for evaluation, students will match number names to digits on a worksheet. The goal is to see who understands the lesson and who needs more practice.

Number Sense

Number sense
Number sense is the understanding of the numbers worth and importance as well as
the flexibility in usage.(mathisfun.com,2016). Number sense is important to young
children because its the base foundation of math. Number sense also branches out
to subconcepts such as counting, relationships and quantities(Ontario, 2003). I have
designed a lesson to teach young children, around kindergarten age, this specific
concept. I designed it while taking the students mental abilities into consideration.
Engage:
The engage part is where I win or lose the students interest, and it affect the way the
lesson will flow greatly. I will start the lesson with a song about numbers, focusing on
the numbers one to ten, to keep them focused. Asking the students to sing will help
them learn via music which would help them develop their musical intelligence
further. Afterwards, I will show the students photos of digits and see how many of
them know the names of numbers. The students will do this activity in a whole group

so I can have a general idea of how much they know. To make the same activity
slightly more challenging, I can ask them to count some shapes and tell me the total.
Explore:
Explore stage is all about the students experiencing with items and possibly learning
through play. As for the activity I will prepare, I will have to divide them into groups of
fours or fives. Each group will have a different set of photos that have photos of
animals with their babies. Each group will receive a worksheet and they will write
down the amount of babies each animal has. The students will select which animal
had the most babies and which had the least.
Explain:
One person of each group will explain to the rest of the class why do they think this
certain animal has the most/least babies. Once the other groups see this, they will
realise that their answers are different. My role as a teacher here is is to stop any
possible conflict that may occur because of the students wont want to listen to
others explanations. I shall get involved, if necessary, and explain to them that they
all have different answers. Moreover, I can use this as a chance to teach them the
importance of respecting others and their opinions.
Elaborate
Elaboration or Extending is the act of adding more details to what is already
existing(Dictionary.com, 2016). Moreover, it is easier for students to understand if it
is related to their lives outside the classroom. Therefore, while Im still on the topic of
animals, I will ask them about having pets in their house. The students will compare
between themselves about who has more pets and who has less. They wont delve
in too deeply because comparing is an entire independant concept.
Evaluate:
I will hand out a worksheet with the numbers and their names. The students will
match the names with the right number (digits). For example, they will match the
number (5) to the word (Five). As kindergarten students, reading words might be a
little difficult, therefore, I will read the words for them. This way I can see who
understood the lesson and who needs more practice.
