Self-Identity of Filipinos
Self-Identity of Filipinos
as family-oriented
Filipino family
The family as the basic
unit of Philippine society
is very significant to the
Filipino. Filipinos are
culturally and
emotionally attached to
their respective families.
The Filipino’s interest and
loyalty is demanded by
his or her family more
than any other institution
in the larger society.
When referring
to families we
do not just
speak of the
immediate
nuclear family,
but our notion
of a family is
extended to a
wider kin group
even if our
household is
nuclear in
form.
This family-
centeredness
supplies a basic
sense of
belonging,
stability and
security. It is
from our
families that we
Filipinos
naturally draw
our sense of
self-identity.
IMAGE OF JESUS
Jesus as both the Son of
God and the Son of Man
endears himself naturally
to us family-oriented
Filipinos. As Son of Man,
Jesus leads us to his Mother
Mary whom he shares with
us. He thus welcomes us
into his own household,
offers himself as our
brother and draws us
through the Sacrament of
Baptism to a new identity.
Jesus embraced little
children and
admonished his
disciples to become
child-like in
openness and
simplicity.
Thus, stress the
importance of our
Filipino family as
both subject and
object of
evangelization.
Image of Mary
The typical Filipino
approach to Christ, is
with and through Mary.
Devotion to Mary has
always been intimately
intertwined with Christ.
We are deeply marked
by the veneration of
Mary. Devotion to Mary
has greatly helped many
Filipinos to remain
Catholics.
The Marian shrines and
statues that are the objects of
fervent devotion by Filipinos
were also studied, for Filipino
spirituality is eminently
Marian.
It’s co-natural to us Filipinos.
Mary is deeply involved in
each of the 5 Filipino
characteristics. The “family
altar” so many Filipino homes
witnesses to Mary as mother
of Jesus
and our spiritual mother.
Thus she is at the center of
our family-centeredness.
