About the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction

In 1983 a group of leaders in the music industry joined together to found the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation. One of the extensions to
the Foundation is to acknowledge the contributions of those who have notably impacted the evolution, development and perpetuation of rock and
roll by inducting them into the Hall of Fame.

Biography
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation was established on April 20, 1983 by Ahmet
Ertegun, founder and chairman of Atlantic Records. The Foundations first induction took place
in 1986, but at the time there was no building to honor them in the way that Ertegun envisioned.
Civic leaders in Cleveland came together and donated $65 million in public funding to start the
construction. A poll was taken in regards to what city the Foundation should be built, Cleveland
ranked first and on May 5, 1986 the Hall of Fame Foundation chose Cleveland as the home of
the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on June
7, 1993 and the ribbon cutting ceremony took place on September 1, 1995 with an all-star
concert following the next night. It featured Chuck Berry, Bob Dylan, Al Green, Jerry Lee Lewis,
Aretha Franklin, Bruce Springsteen, Iggy Pop, John Fogerty, John Mellencramp and several
others.
Artists are inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame annually at the induction ceremony.
In the past, the vast majority of the ceremonies were held at the Waldford-Astoria Hotel in New
York City. This changed on January 12, 1993 when the ceremony was held for the first time in
Los Angeles and then again in 2013. The ceremony was held in Cleveland two years after the
grand opening. The ceremony is set to occur every 3 years and the number of inductees ranges
from six to 12. All living inductees have attended and are presented with their award by an artist
who was influenced by the inductees music. Afterwards, both the presenter and the inductee
speak and give a performance. In order for an artist to be eligible for induction, they have to wait
25 years after the release of their first record. They are then chosen by a nominating committee
comprised of rock and roll historians. They select the names from the inductees category
(singers, vocal groups, bands, and instrumentalists of all kinds) and then voted by 500 hundred
experts that range from academics, journalists, producers and others with music industry
experience.

Written Speech
It is with great honor and pleasure that I take this time out to inform you of our upcoming event!
Every year The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation celebrate those who have without a
doubt made an irrevocable impression upon the rock and roll community. Over the years, the
induction ceremony has attracted a lot of attention and people from all over the world to come to
the Induction Ceremony to share an unforgettable moment with the inductees. Not only is this a
time to honor the inductees, but it is also a time for them to share their love for music with their
fans. While many are humbled that they were even chosen to partake in this legacy, they dont
fully understand just how much goes into this event. Lee Loughnane, Co founder of the band
Chicago stated, Its very exciting. I had no idea it would be as exciting as it is. From the
eligibility process, to getting chosen to get inducted is an honor within itself, but then to arrive
the day of the event and know that their passion and life works are being put on display for
millions to see long after they have transitioned from this life time is astounding. This event is
like no other and will have the attention of media outlets across the nation as the event goes live
on HBO. As one of the most talked about events of the year, I admonish you to join in and take
part either by attending the event, becoming a sponsor or viewing the event via television, as we
once again make history!
