The document provides steps for editing a music video. It describes transferring footage to a computer, reviewing the footage to select shots, using Adobe After Effects to correct imperfections like jitters. Shots are then inserted into the timeline of the music video project in Sony Vegas. Editing includes shortening or extending shots to match the pace of the song. Color correction is also applied to convey desired feelings like sadness. Text overlays and time-lapse sequences are added before exporting the final video.

EDITING BOOKLET
John Dumo
In terms of editing it really depends on personal
preferences and what programmes you are comfortable using, for me I used a mixture of Adobe After Effects, Premier and Sony Vegas Pro 12. What I would usually do is section off several parts of the music video (usually in 1/4). The first stage of creating our music video is to transfer all footage from any Cameras & SD cards to a computer or a safe hard drive. The advantage of using a hard drive is that the footage can be edited on several computers not just one. Once footage is transferred over take some time to sift through them this allows the editor to find the right
The footage is then relocated to After Effects ready for any
editable imperfections, such as jitters and bumps, which occur when filming. The shots are imported by simply clicking file>import>fotage In this case there were very little as a glide cam was used making the footage smooth. To correct this there is a filter effect called Warp Stabiliser this is used to warps parts of the video to hide any flaws but the down side to this is that some parts of video may look out of place. The common place for over doing Warp Stabiliser is the shadows these become noticeably warped and out of place.
Once the imperfections are corrected the accurate shot
is inserted into the timeline of the music with a simple drag and drop (Sony Vegas). Its at this stage each shot is shortened or extended or slowed down to accommodate for the pace and feeling of the song. This can be done by holding down Control Button and extending the footage (slow down) or shortening the footage (speed up).
Markers are then inserted to highlight each part of the music
video the scene has to change; this is cutting to the beat. Simply pressing the M button at the desired time can do this. This then repeated for all four sections slightly varying in terms of how much editing is needed.
Once all footage is in place the colour correction has to be done.
This means changing the temperature of the overall video to fit for what type of feeling we are trying to convey, in this case we are conveying sadness, loneliness and the feeling of distance. This can be done by clicking the Video FX tab and selecting colour correction and changing the temperature to the following parameters.
At this stage I started editing the text message overlay, which
in terms of previous editing is more complex than it sounds. The process includes calculations, custom movements and small coding, which mainly occurred during shape movement. Once the overlay is complete I export or render the footage using a more professional in programme algorithm of Adobe After Effects.
Time-lapse sequence in this video is quite short but worth it as it
mainly used to show progression of time and how the character has developed over time. To achieve this effect I changed the image time length in Sony Vegas from 1 seconds to 0.116 making the images a time-lapse sequence. Approximately 250 images are used in this time-lapse.
CONVEYING INFORMATION
In conjunction with the lyrical analysis. We try to convey the love
felt meaning of the song Apparently By J. Cole, but not in the sense of son to mother but instead friend to friend. For example in the post hook it mentions how J. Cole left his mother to pursue his career in new york and how even through this neglect his mother still supports his success. This is the same affection conveyed between the two characters and even through the struggle they still care for each other.
