Micro and Membrane Reactor

This document discusses micro-reactors and membrane reactors. It describes how micro-reactors offer improved control of reaction parameters like temperature and concentrations. They can be fabricated from materials like glass, quartz, and stainless steel. Micro-reactors have benefits like higher surface area to volume ratio and efficient heat exchange. Membrane reactors combine reaction and separation and are commonly used for dehydrogenation reactions. They have semi-permeable membranes that allow only specific products to pass.

MICRO-REACTORS
Micro reactors are defined as miniaturized reaction systems, fabricated by micro
technology. The chemical reactions which are happening in micro reactors are the
batch reactions.

Micro reactors offer a much improved control of reaction parameters, such as

temperature and relative concentrations and allow higher yields, smaller amounts
of by-products.

Micro reactors can be fabricated with materials like

Glass
Quartz
Diamond
Polyimide
Silicon
Stainless steel
Nickel

APPLICATIONS OF MEMBRANE REACTORS

Membrane reactors combine reaction with separation to
increase conversion (Le Chatelier's Principle).

Membrane reactors are commonly used in dehydrogenation

reactions (molecular hydrogen).
