PEST AND VERMIN POLICY

RATIONALE

The health, safety and well being of the staff and children are paramount.

PURPOSE

To provide an environment that is free of pests and vermin.

PROCEDURES

* Alert the health and safety officer if evidence of pest or vermin is found.

* Dispose of any evidence found into two plastic bags and place into the green bins
immediately.

* Clean the area with hot soapy water and then disinfect. Leave to dry for ½ an hour.

* The health safety officer will inform management.

* In the event of a pest infestation, a pest control contractor shall be engaged.

* The contractor will meet the following requirements:


a. Any products used, must be approved for public health use by the Pesticides Board and
the contractors must either:
b. Belong to an appropriate professional organisation and abide by the codes of practice OR
c. Have adopted appropriate code of practice.

* A written report and follow up procedure form will be filed and reviewed as necessary.

* Chemicals shall be applied in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines.

* Details of any product used and the first aid requirements will be recorded in the
hazard register and kept in a file in the office on a material safety data sheet
(MSD’s)
* No poison will be applied to the centre premises during operational hours.

* Children will not have access to poisons.

* When fly spray is used, it needs to be a spray that contains the active ingredient of
pyrethrum. Fly spray should be used before/after hours of operation.

* A notice will be placed on the notice board to inform the parents of the action taken to
eradicate the problem and any requirements for medical assistance concerning products
used.
