Chapter 6 Lecture Notes
Organizational Diversity
-demography
-changing workplace
-birthrates, immigration, gender parity (women in workforce is rising)
-challenges and opportunities
Organizational Change can be cause of stress
-older workers gets stressed with the increase of younger workers which
bring in new habits and ideas
-diversity of opinions is very important but groups must work well together
and feel that they can openly discuss their ideas
Convergence and Divergence
-convergence hypothesis: assumes principles are universal (what works in
the US should work anywhere!)
-divergence hyp: recognizes that effective management requires clear
understanding of culture differences
-collectivist culture: focuses more on group interest rather than of the
individual; look at themselves as members of a larger group; east-asian
culture
-individualist: looks at personal goals and gain; more autonomous
