"Can Too Much Social Media Cause Depression?" Hwell. N.p., n.d. Web. 09 Apr. 2016.
This article would be considered a secondary source and summarizes the points of how
social media causes depression. This article goes into depth on evaluating teenagers real-time
relationships vs. teenagers virtual connections online. Dr. Paula Durlofsky, the psychologist
who researched this topic, talks about how social media can have positive and negative affects on
a teenager, but it depends on the teenagers own perception towards social media. Another point
that Dr. Paula Durlofsky mentioned was that understanding the personal reasons of why a
teenager uses social media is a huge key on whether it leads to depression. This article also
includes a list of tips to help balance virtual relationships and real-time relationships for not just
teenagers, but the general public.
This article will contribute to my research essay because it touches on a specific mental
illness that I will also be discussing in my research essay. Although this article only talks about
the mental illness depression, it still provides enough evidence on how social media can lead to
this. The tips that this article provides will give me healthy solutions on how teenagers can cope
with the balance of social media vs. the real life.

This TED talk is considered a primary source that talks about how the internet and social
media has reshaped our relationships, personal lives, and sense of self. The speaker, Sherry
Turkle, provides extraordinary points on how social media has redefined human connections and
communications. She states that technology has brought amazing new connections, businesses,
and help to our world, but that technology is not helping human interaction. She makes a point to
the audience to really think deeply about the new kinds of connections that we want to have and
if its virtual or personal. This TED talk will help contribute to my research essay because it
provides me more information on the pros and cons of social media. This TED talk also provides
statistics of how many users of social media there are in our world and statistics of how its
effected our world positively and negatively.
Cohen, Shimi. "This Designer Created A Brilliant Video That Explains How Social
Media Makes Us Lonely." Digital Synopsis. N.p., n.d. Web. 09 Apr. 2016.
This article is considered a primary source because it includes a video that talks about
how social media makes us lonely. The designer of this video, Shimi Cohen, includes motion
graphics combined with psychological insight of how social media connects with loneliness.
Although the videos topic is about the negative effects of social media, it also states on some
positive outcomes of social media. This video starts off with the evolutionary history of how
monkeys first started to communicate and than contrasts it with the way humans communicate
today. This video not only provides me with historical statistics on social communication, but
also social statistics on how our communication has changed since social media entered the lifes
of people. This video will contribute to my research essay by providing me with communication
differences from the past to now. This will help my essay by providing me with support to my
main points of how our lifes have evolved with social media.

The publisher writes about how our culture has changed from being social to anti-social because
of the overuse of social media. This may seem ironic, since the thing were using is called social
media, but the publisher explains that we are loosing touch with the world around us when we
are obsessed with the thought of using social media. This article helps support my main points of
my research essay by providing me with facts about the unhealthy ways that people overuse
social media. This article also provides an insight on people who are actually addicted to using
social media and the ways that their lifes have changed from it. Solutions of social media
overuse and responsibilities of social media use are also points that are touched on in this article.
This article will help support and back up my main points of how social media can be unhealthy
in teenagers.

book talks about how social media has changed the lives of human interactions. The publisher,
Scott Monty, is the chief at Global Digital Communications who states different points on how
communicating through social media can be positive and negative. Not only does he talk about
how social media effects the personal lifes of humans, but also how it effects the work life of
humans. Social media has skyrocketed some of the most famous businesses that we see today

and with out we would loose a big proportion of businesses. This article gives me an insight on
how social media effects the business life and how it works in it. This will provide me with
information that I can use to prove my positive effects of social media in my research essay.

This article is a secondary source that emphasizes on the phrase social media addiction.
The article compares and contrasts communication skills vs. virtual communications skills and
shows significant evidence of how they differentiate. The article also touches on how social
media addiction can cause serious side effects, mental illnesses, and social deficient in a persons
life. All of those points can help support my topic of how social media use can lead to mental
illnesses. Not only does this article talk about the interaction of social media with people, but
goes in depth on how teenagers have the biggest risk of developing social deficits when using
social media.
