Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of digital tools and resources to
systematically collect and analyze student achievement data, interpret results,
communicate findings, and implement appropriate interventions to improve
instructional practice and maximize student learning. (ISTE 2h)
Artifact: Data Overview
Reflection:
The data overview was completed for ITEC7305. The purpose of this data was to
analyze and determine, if any, achievement gaps within the school. The data
collected consists of the Geometry EOC math scores for the last three years. It
was a very frustrating assignment because the curriculum changed in each of the
last three years. I not only taught the last three curriculums, I also administered the
test. The interpretation of the results lead to some strengths and weaknesses I
found at my school. The results were communicated with the principal and the
department head, In lieu of the findings praise and changes were administered.
I completed a data overview for the last three years in Geometry. These EOC scores
are summative assessments for students in the 10 th grade. I used the results to
formulate a data overview. The analysis served as a model for the performance of
our students and a direct correlation of our math department interpreting the
standards. I was able to facilitate the results to my principal and use the
summative assessment to gather aggregated data as well as data disaggregated by
ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and students with disabilities. In the course of the
observation, I was also able to breakdown my schools demographics and compare
it to the faculty. I believe the results of my findings will help us implement
appropriate interventions to meet the needs of at risk students and improve
student learning. The results will also help in employment selection moving forward
closing our gap between our student population and our staff.
From completing this artifact, I learned how important the use of analyzing
assessment data can be to inform teachers instructional practices. The data
overview should help teachers identify students who are at risk and students who
need to be pushed through improving critical thinking skills. If I were to complete
this again, I would involve more content areas. Involving more content areas would
only improve student achievement for the whole school.
The work from this assignment had a positive impact on faculty development
because it showed the importance of data collection. The analysis of identifying
achievement gaps will help our faculty address the problem.
