Cad Tool

Orcad Capture and Layout are electronic design software tools. Capture is used to draw schematic designs by placing part symbols and connecting them logically. Layout is used to design printed circuit boards by importing the netlist from Capture and placing physical components and routing copper traces. The design process involves creating a Capture schematic, generating a netlist, importing it into Layout to place components and route the board, then post processing to produce milling files for fabrication.

Orcad Capture

Capture is an electronic design environment

Capture is used to draw a schematic design of
your electronic device
Logical connections
Part symbols

Starting Orcad Capture (in Windows)

Start Programs Cadence PSD Capture

Orcad Layout
Layout is a circuit board layout tool
Layout is used to design the physical printed
circuit board (PCB) of your electronic device
A netlist (.MNL file) produced by the Capture tool
is used as an input to the Layout tool

Orcad Layout (contd)

Starting Orcad Layout (in Windows)
Start Programs Cadence PSD Layout

PCB Design Process

Create a new project with Orcad Capture

Draw the schematic design of you device

Part symbols
Logical connections between parts

Create the netlist (.MNL file) from your

schematic design

PCB Design Process

(contd)
Start Orcad layout
Load a technology template file (.TPL or .TCH file)
Load the netlist (.NML) file created with Orcad
Capture

PCB Design Process

(contd)
Design the PCB of your device
Draw the outline of your PCB
Place physical components (footprints)
Draw physical (copper) connections between
components

Finally, post process your PCB design which will

produce files (.TOP, .BOT, .TAP) for the PCB milling
machine .

PCB Design Process

(contd)
Send the three files (.TOP, .BOT, .TAP) to
fabrication center for manufacturing of your PCB

Decoupling capacitor

File-New-Project
On creating New project,
two files are created ate
the location for the new
project with extensions
.opj (OrCAD project
file)
.dsn (Date Soucre Name
file)

Right click library Add File

Open EMBEDDED2004.OLB

Place-Part(ATmega32)

MCU in place

..place capacitor

..and DC-connector

..and LED

Place wires, powers and grounds

Tools-Create Netlist

Select Layout-OK

Start Orcad layout

File-New: load template

..and the netlist file and

save

Place parts

Draw board outline

Route PCB

Auto-Run Post Processor

Check for milling files
