UmeedisanNGOthatmyfriendsandIjoinedinthemonthof
February,2016.TheNGOaimsatchildeducationandislocated
inLaxmiNagar.
IthasbeenanyearsincetheNGOisfunctionalandhascarried
outvariousactivitiesinthepastincludingaspecialperformance
bythetoddlersintheAnnualDiwaliCulturalFestivalandahealth
campsetupinthesocietytomonitorthewellbeingofallthe
societymembers/maidsandworkers.
Startedupwithjust5volunteersand12kids,todaythereare15
volunteersandover50students.Allthevolunteersandstudents
meeteverySaturdayfrom4to6intheeveningandeverySunday
from9to11inthemorningtostudyandhavefuntogether.
WithbetterlearningandfriendlyenvironmenttheNGOhave
startedtheirnewacademicsessionandmorethan80students
haveenrolledsofarwithincreasingamountofvolunteerswilling
toparticipate.
Manypeoplewithinandoutsidethesocietyhavedonated
somethingortheotherandprovingthemwithnohindrancein
theireducationandlearning.
DESCRIPTIONOFUNDERTAKENWORK
Studiesaresomethingthateveryonedreadsordislikes.Itis
acompulsiononpeoplelikeusaswehavenoother
choice.Itwashenceverynormalforchildrenlikethesekids
whoareunderprivilegedtofinditboring.PeopleofUmeed
didtheirusualjobofteachingthesechildrenregular
subjectslikemaths,EnglishetcwhereasIdecidedtoteach
themsomethingoutoftheordinaryforthem.
AsweenteredUdaan,myfriendsandInoticedthatthe
childrenwerebeingtaughtbutnoteducatedthatis,they
werenotbeingtaughtanylifeskillssuchasyoga,dance,
papercraftoranyotherartformhencewedecidedtobring
outachangeandlightenthesparkofholisticdevelopment.
Myobjectiveswere:
a)Makethechildrenenjoywhilelearning
b)Makethesechildrenvalueeducation
c)Instilcreativityinthem
d)Createhealthawareness
e)Teachthembasicmanners
f)Teachthemhowtoliveinafriendlyenvironment
Theseobjectiveswereeasilyachievedasthechildrenand
theorganizationwasextremelyhelpfulandcooperative.The
firstdayIbasicallystartedwithasimpleinteractionsession
tofamiliarizethechildrenwithmyself.Theybecamequite
comfortablewithme.Itoldthemabouttheimportanceof
educationandhowwecanleadasuccessfullifebystudying
hard.Thekidshadgreatenergy.Nextclass,Itaughtthem
poemsandabitofdancetochangetheirmonotonous
routine.Theyenjoyeditalot.AstheclassesprogressedI
taughtthemabitofcraftandart.Theymanagedtodraw
withalotofmess.Everyweek,wetaughtthemnewer
thingssuchasyoga,spellingouttheGayatriMantra,
recitationofpoemswithactionsandsoon.
Theywereeventaughttomakeapaperbagoutofold
newspaper.Wehadahealthawarenesscampaignaswell.
Thechildrenweretaughtaboutbasicsanitationandhealth
diseases.
Umeedorganizedaholicelebrationfunctionforthese
children.Theydancedonthesongtaughtbyus.
Bytheendofmysessionswiththesechildrentheyknew
verywelltohowtouseThankyouandtheyweregreeting
everyonetheyknew.Eventhoughweareteachingthem
variousskills,wealwaysmakesurethatwedistributesome
foodsuchasfruitsattheend!
ACHIEVEMENTS
Alltheobjectivessetbymewereachieved.Thechildren
hadlearntbasicmannersandwerehappytolearnand
studymorethanever.Theywerekeenonlearningcraftand
art.Thehealthawarenesscamptooinstilledknowledgein
them.Theyknewaboutbasichealthconcernsanddiseases.
Theynowknowthepreventionsandcurestofever,malaria,
dengueetc.
Thesechildrenvalueeducationnowandallofthemsee
themselvesassomeonesuccessful.Allofthekidshada
goalthattheywishtoachieve.
TheywereveryhappytoseemeeverytimeIwenttothem
becausetheywerewillingtolearnsomethingnew.Everytime
theywouldask,Didiaajkyakarenge?Theywereall
pumpeduptolearn.
Thecountofthesechildrenincreasedovertime.From2025
children,itincreasedto40childrenfromtheagegroupof5
yearstoteenagers.
SELFEVALUATION
Theoutreachworkwasadifferentexperienceforme
altogether.Ihavegonetoalotofplaces,metalotof
differentpeoplebutneverfeltsohappybeingarounda
bunchofchildrenwhoarenotevenfromthesamesocial
classandaresodiferent.Beingaroundthesechildrenwas
likeasafehavenforme.Iwenttoteachthemalotof
thingsbuttheyinreturntaughtmealotofthingslikebeing
selfless,valuingfoodandotherstuff,beinghardworkingetc.I
startedthinkinglikethemonvariousaspects.Theloveand
respectthesechildrenhaveisenormous.
EverythingthatIevertaughtthemorgavethemwaskept
bythemsosafely.
Ithoughtthiscommunityworktobethesamecompulsory
boringsocialworkthatIhadtodoinschool.Butthiswas
altogetherdifferent.Thesekidslookeduptometolearn
newstuff.Theythoughtmetobeangelforthemwhowould
bringfuntotheirboringlife.Thisloveandrespectmademe
careforthesechildrenalot.Iliterallystartedthinkingabout
doingalotforthesekids.Iwouldoccasionallygetthemfood
andchocolates.Fewofthesechildrendidnthaveproper
clothestowear.Ievengavefewofthemclothes.
Thesechildrenalsoinstilledasenseofresponsibilityand
organizationinme.IknewIhadtoteachthesechildren
whateverIcouldbecausethesearethefutureofournation.I
wouldgetupeverymorningandthinkaboutnumerous
thingsIcouldteachthemordowiththem.Ibecame
responsibleforthemandtheirlearning.Ihadtoarrangeand
organizefortheirartandcraftmaterial.
Whattouchedmethemostwasthatthesechildreneven
turneduptolearnonadaywhenitwasrainingheavily.All
drenchedtheysateagerlyandwaitedfortheirteachersto
comeandteachthem.Theirwillingnesstolearnmademe
valuemylearningsandeducation.
Thesechildrenmanagedtomakeaspecialplaceinmy
heartandourrelationshipwillnotsurelynotendwiththe
endofmyservicehours.Iwillcontinuevisitingthemand
teachingthem.
WORKDONE
TheweeklyreportonmyworkdoneinhelpingKhusbooWelfare
Societyachievetheirgoalingivenbelow.
WeekI:
Intheintroductoryweek,Iwassupposedtounderstandthework
andbuildagoodrapportwiththestaffandstudentstounderstand
thewayoftheirworkinginabetterway.Iwasintroducedtothe
childrenwhomIwasgoingtobewithforrestofthetime.The
seconddayoftheway,Iwasaskedtoteachthestudentsofage
group610,thebasicalphabetsofEnglishandIfurtherhelped
themlearnthe3lettereasywords.Ialsotaughtthemhowtowrite
theirownnamesinEnglish.
AlsoIhadachatwiththechildrentounderstandwhatbackground
eachonebelongedto.Havingdonethis,Irealisedhowdifficult
theirlifewasandhowlittleIcouldupliftthembyteachingthem.
WeekII:
DuringthesecondweekIcarriedonwiththebasicsof
mathematicsandgavethemsimpleproblemstosolve.Asa
rewardIaskedoneofthemwhowouldbethefirsttosolvethe
problemcorrectly,toplayx&o'swithme.Thishelpedin
maintainingtheirinterestaswellasmadelearningfunforthem.
BeingfromdifferentbackgroundsIwasnotabletounderstand
someofwhattheysaidandsometimestheycouldnotunderstand
me.Butlater,astheclassproceededtheyhelpedmein
understandingthemselvesbetterandopeneduptome.
WeekIII:
Duringthethirdweek,Englishclasswasconductedwherethey
weretaughttheframingofsmallsentenceslikehowtosaytheir
name,ageandwheredotheybelongto.Iaskedmystudentsto
greetwhoevercomestoteachthemwithagoodmorningandsay
byetothemandathankyouwhentheyleave.Inorderto
introducethemselvestonewpeopleImadethemsayHello,my
nameis.........
Theylikedthisalotandevenpracticedintroducingthemselvesto
me.
Duringthesecondhalf,Italkedtothemabouthabitsandpersonal
hygiene.Itoldthemaboutthedesiredandgoodhabitsthey
shouldfollowandotherstheyshoulddiscontinuedoing.Asthe
childrenIwasteachingbelongedtotheslum,Itriedtoeducate
themabitabouthygieneandhowtheycanstayawayfrom
diseasesinanaffordableway.
WeekIV:
Weekfourwassupposedtobeallottedforrecreationalactivities
likegames,singinganddancing.Duetothelackofequipment
dancecouldnotbeheldbutgamesandsingingwasdone.
Childrenindulgedintheseactivitieswithgreatinterestandwere
happyindoingthesethings.Theyweremadetoplaygamesand
sportslikecricket,footballandsomeinterestedinsingingwentfor
thesingingactivity.
Mathswasalsotaughttothestudentswhohadtheirinterestin
studyingratherthanrecreationalactivities.Basicquestionswere
givenandtheywereaskedtosolvethem.
