Homework #7
1. Two W100 19.3 rolled sections are welded together as shown. Knowing that for the steel alloy used
Y = 260 MPa and U = 400 MPa and using a factor of safety of 3.0, determine the largest couple that
can be applied when the assembly is bent about the z axis.
2. Two vertical forces are applied to a beam of the cross section shown. Determine the maximum tensile
and compressive stresses in portion BC of the beam.
3. Knowing that for the extruded beam shown the allowable stress is 120 MPa in tension and 150 MPa in
compression, determine the largest couple M that can be applied.
4. Knowing that a beam of the cross section shown is bent about a horizontal axis and that the bending
moment is 6 kN-m, determine the total force acting on the top flange.
5. Knowing that for the casting shown the allowable stress is 42 MPa in tension and 105 MPa in
compression, determine the largest couple M that can be applied.
6. A couple of magnitude M is applied to a square bar of side a. For each of the orientations shown,
determine the maximum stress and the curvature of the bar.
7. Two members of uniform cross section 50 80 mm are glued together along plane a-a that forms an
angle of 25 with the horizontal. Knowing that the allowable stresses for the glued joint are = 800 kPa
and = 600 kPa, determine the largest centric load P that can be applied.
8. The steel pipe AB has a 102-mm outer diameter and a 6-mm wall thickness. Knowing that arm CD is
rigidly attached to the pipe, determine the principal stresses and the maximum shearing stress at point K.
9. Determine the principal planes and the principal stresses for the state of plane stress resulting from the
superposition of the two states of stress shown.
10. For the state of stress shown, determine the range of values of for which the magnitude of the shearing
stress xy is equal to or less than 56 MPa.
