Composite Functions

This section discusses combining and composing functions. It defines composite functions as the composition of one function with another. It provides examples of adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing functions. It also gives examples of finding the composition of two functions f(x) and g(x), written as f o g(x). One example finds the composition (N o T)(t) to model the bacteria count N over time t as the temperature T of food changes over time after removal from refrigeration.

Section 2.

Combinations of Functions: Composite Functions

Objectives
Add, subtract, multiply, and divide functions.
Find the composition of one function with another function.
Use combinations and compositions of functions to model and solve real-life problems.

1. Add, subtract, multiply, and divide functions

Example 1 Given f (x) = 2x + 1 and g(x) = x2 + 2x 1,

a. Find (f + g)(x). Then evaluate the sum when x = 3.

b. Find (f g)(x).

2. Find the composition of one function with another function

Figure 2.36

f g reads as f composed with g.

Example 5 Given f (x) = x + 2 and g(x) = 4 x2, find the following.

a. (f g)(x)

b. (g f )(x)

c.

(g f )(2)

Example 6 find the domain of (f g)(x) for the function f (x) = x2 9 and g(x) = 9 2 .

Example 7 Write function h(x) = (3x 5)3 as the composite of two functions.

3. Application
Example 8 The number N of bacteria in a refrigerated food is given by
N(T ) = 20T 2 80T + 500,

2 T 14

where T is the temperature of the food in degrees Celsius. When the food is removed from
refrigeration, the temperature of the food is given by
T(t) = 4t + 2,

0t3

where t is the time in hours.

a. Find the composition (N T)(t) and interpret its meaning in context.

b. Find the time when the bacteria count reaches 2000.
