ATM Flow Control: Submitted By:Shivinder Singh Thakur & Varun Kalia - 7040301160,7040301175 Cse-6

ATM flow control mechanisms are needed because traditional hop-by-hop flow control cannot be used in ATM networks. There are two types of connections in ATM - controlled and uncontrolled. For controlled connections, the cell emission rate is regulated by GFC signals. Flow control signals like HALT, SET, and NULL are used to control cell transmission for both controlled and uncontrolled connections. ABR (Available Bit Rate) services use credit-based or rate-based flow control, providing no QoS guarantees and allowing cell transmission to depend on current network load as indicated in resource management cells sent back to the source.

INTRODUCTION

 Flow Control In ATM Networks Play a Slightly Different

role then in conventional Networks .

 Traditional hop by hop flow control methods cannot be

used in ATM networks.

Basic purpose of flow control in ATM is to ensure

effective utilization of available bandwidth.

In ATM delayed cell is same as a lost cell.

FLOW CONTROL MECHANISMS
GENERIC FLOW CONTROL KEYPOINTS
Connections in Controlled Equipment
 Controlled Connection – This refer to connection
whose cell emission rate is controlled by GFC
signals .
Resources are not reserved in advance in
Controlled Connection.

Uncontrolled Connections - This refer to

connection whose cell emission rate is not controlled
by GFC signals .
Resources are reserved in advance in Uncontrolled
Connection.
VALUE CHART OF GFC
Bit Value Interpretation

0000 Terminal is uncontrolled . Cell is assigned

or an uncontrolled connection.
0001 Terminal is controlled . Cell is unassigned
or an uncontrolled connection.
0101 Terminal is controlled . Cell on an
controlled connection Group A.
0011 Terminal is controlled . Cell on an
controlled connection Group B.
GFC SIGNALS
 HALT – This signal is used to stop the transmission of
assigned ATM layer cells for both controlled and
uncontrolled ATM connection.

SET – The controlling device issues SET signal to set

the credit counter to a specified integer value .

NULL – The controlling device may at times send

NULL signal ,indicating that no action has to be taken .
ABR FLOW CONTROL
 For ABR traffic ,the source controls its data injection
rates according to the loading conditions of the network

Current load of the network is conveyed to the source

through resource management cells .

ABR service does not provide Qos guarantee.

Cell transmission depends on the current state of

network.
ABR APPROACHES
 CREDIT BASED FLOW CONTROL

RATE BASED FLOW CONROL.

ABR KEY POINTS
In credit based scheme credits are assigned hop by
hop so each hop must know how much data to
transmit and when .
Its basically a hop by hop feedback control mechanism
.Once credit count reaches zero then sender is
prohibited to send anymore data .

In rate based flow control end to end feedback

control mechanism is followed . The destination sends
back control information to the source
