Assignment Engineering Mechanics

This engineering mechanics assignment contains 7 problems involving determining moments of inertia, products of inertia, resultant forces, and points of application for various geometric shapes and force systems. It also includes problems finding the minimum distance required for equilibrium of cables suspending a chandelier and determining the maximum overhang of stacked books before toppling. The final problem involves using geometric relationships to determine helicopter speed from radar tracking data.

Assignment

1.

Determine the moment of inertia of the shaded area (shown in Fig. 1) about the x and y
axes. Use the differential element for both the calculations.

2. Determine the product of inertia about xy- axes of the circular area (shown in Fig. 2) with
equal three square holes. All dimensions are in mm.
3.

For the given force system (shown in Fig. 3), determine the resultant force and its point of
application and direction. All dimensions are in mm.

4.

Find resultant force and the point of application for the given beam as shown in Fig. 4.

5.

The thin ring can be adjusted vertically between three equal long cables from which the 100
kg chandelier is suspended. If the ring remains in the horizontal plane and tension in each
cable is not allowed to exceed 1 KN, determine the smallest allowable distance z required
for equilibrium.

6.

Three uniform books each of equal weight and length a, are stacked as shown in Fig. 6.
Determine the maximum distance d, that the top book can extend out from the bottom one
so that stack does not topple over.

7.

Determine the largest mass m of the suspended block so that force in any member does not
exceed 30 kN (T) or 25 kN (C).

8.

After take-off, a helicopter climbs in a straight line at a constant angle . Its flight is tracked
by a radar from point A. Determine the speed of the helicopter in terms of d, ,
