Tutorial Questions

This document contains 7 tutorial questions related to mechanics. Question 1 asks about determining the reaction force at a fixed support given the tension in a wire. Question 2 asks about determining where a fourth child should stand on a raft to balance the total weight. Question 3 asks about calculating the moment produced by a crate's weight and the force needed to balance it.

TUTORIAL QUESTIONS

1. Knowing that the tension in wire BD as 1300 N, determine the reaction at

the fixed support C of the frame.

2. Three children are standing on a 5 x 5m raft. The mass of the children at

points A, B and C are 37.5 kg, 26 kg and 400 kg respectively. If a fourth
child of mass 42.5 kg climbs onto the raft, determine where the child
should stand if the other children remain in the positions shown and the
line of action of the resultant of the four weights is to pass through the
center of the raft.

3. A crate of mass 80 kg is held in the position shown. Determine, (a) the

moment produced by the weight W of the crate about E, (b) the smallest
force applied at B that creates a moment of equal magnitude and opposite
sense about E.

4. Replace the force and couple moment system acting on the beam by an
equivalent resultant force and find where its line of action intersects the

beam, measured from point O.

5. Two bolts at A and B are tightened by applying the forces and couples
shown. Replace the two wrenches with a single equivalent wrench and
determine the resultant R. Also find the resultant moment at origin.

6. A group of students loads a 2 x 3.3 m flatbed trailer with two 0.66 x 0.66 x
0.66 m boxes and one 0.66 x 0.66 x 1.2 m box. Each of boxes at rear end
of trailer is positioned so that is aligns with both the back and side of a
trailer. Determine the smallest loads the students should place in a second
0.66 x 0.66 x 1.2 m box and where on the trailer should they secure it
without any part of the box overhanging the sides of the trailer, if each
box is uniformly loaded and line of action of resultant of weights of four
boxes is to pass through point of intersection of center lines of trailer and
axle (Hint: Keep in mind that box may be placed on either sides or on its
ends)

7. In order to clean a clogged drained pipe AE, a plumber has disconnected

both ends of pipe and inserted a power snake through the opening at A.
The cutting head of the snake is connected by a heavy cable to an electric
motor that rotates at a constant speed as the plumber forces the cable
into the pipe. Forces exerted by plumber and motor on end of cable can be
represented by a wrench, F= (-48 N) k, M= (-90 Nm) k. Determine the
additional reactions at B, C and D caused by cleaning operation. (Assume
that reaction at each support consists of two force components
perpendicular to pipe). If the plumber exerts a force of F= (-48N) k and
motor is turned off (M=0), determine the reactions at B, C and D.
