Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Assessment (MoPTA)

Lesson Plan Format/Rubric

Standards/Quality Indicators/Skills with brief description
Common Core standards
Include at least one standard, with a brief description of the skill
the student will accomplish.
6.EE.B Reason about and solve one-variable equations and inequalities.
6.EE.B.5 Understand solving an equation or inequality as a process of answering a
question: which values from a specified set, if any, make the equation or
inequality true? Use substitution to determine whether a given number in a
specified set makes an equation or inequality true.

Learning Objectives/Goals (Bloom vocabulary)

The lessons objectives and learning outcomes appropriate for meeting
curricular and student needs
Include no more than 2 objectives, stated correctly as taught.

Students will be able to understand equations and the parts of an equation

by creating their own and labeling the parts.

Assessment (type[s] of assessment used throughout the lesson)

What will inform your instruction? Assessment(s) before, during, and
after the lesson: Think: It does not have to be a test it can be effective
questioning, conferencing, pair share what will you do?
Before: Pre-assessment:
Class discussion on knowledge
During: check for understanding:
Worksheet having students work individually
After: final assessment
Class discussions on what they came up with

Lesson Structure and Procedures

Sequence of events of the lesson elements.
(The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g., Engagement/Opening,
Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion)
Steps in the instructional act: Anticipatory Set, Opening, Engagement:
To begin, I will talk about balancing scales and what they are used for
Input, Procedures, Lesson:
After talking about balance scales i will show how math is used. Equations
should be balanced like a scale.
Guided Practice:
As a class we will create equations and label them.
Independent Practice:
I will create a worksheet that students will have to make equations and
label the parts or make different equation according to the equation terms.
Closure:
class discussion about worksheet.
Instructional Strategies: Think: partners, Flexible Grouping,
Conferencing, etc. (other best practices). *modeling
Teacher approach to helping students achieve the learning objectives and
meet their needs
Instructional strategies will be based on class participation and discussion.
There will also be individual work and at that time the teacher will walk
around helping students in need.
Learning Activities: Think: What will the students do? Could be
independent or guided practice, group work, research, read aloud, read to
self, etc.
Opportunities provided for students to develop knowledge and skills of the
learning objectives
For the most part, the students will be participating in class discusion or will
be working on their worksheet individually. Followed by class discussion on
the individual worksheet
Resources and Materials: Think: What do I need for the lesson?
List of materials used in the planning of and during the instruction of the
lesson

I will need a computer and a projector to show my slide show, a board to

write on to explain in farther detail (if needed), and i will need a copy of my
activity sheet for each student.
Technology: How can you introduce, extend, reinforce, the learning
with technology: Think Web2.0 tools, smart notebook tools, iPads,
Promethean board, etc.
Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to
enhance instruction and student learning
I will have technology in the form of the PowerPoint to show kids a more
better visual and will be better for time management so that i dont have to
draw.
Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor
To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and
language differences, etc. Think: SPED, Gifted, ELL, Flexible grouping
(whole group, small group, one-on-one), mini-lesson, departmentalized, etc.
Differentiation addresses learning styles and ability levels.
There will be class discussions as the lesson among the PowerPoint is being
presented and introduced to the class. Then as students break off on their
own and work individually on their activity, I will walk around the classroom
to help students who need additionally help to understand what was
presented to them.
Classroom Management
Strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that also meet
student behavior needs to help keep students on task and actively engaged:
Think transitions, clear concise directions, task specific feedback, organized
delivery, procedures, engagement, developmentally appropriate and proper
level of difficulty.
Before I begin, i will grab the attention of my students. Once they are all
paying attention i will begin the PowerPoint and we will have discussion on
how balance scales and equations work to show balance and equality to
both sides.
Extensions: Think: Blooms taxonomy, project-based, inquiry-based, small
group, investigations, WebQuest, long-term projects, menu of choices,
Activities for early finishers that extends students understanding of and
thinking about the learning objectives by applying their new knowledge in a
different way.
This lesson is just the beginning of what can be expanded upon. The next
part will be how to manipulate the equations to get what we want while
keeping the equations balanced. I will show that this can be done by
showing whatever you do to one side of the equal sign you must do to the

other side of the equal sign. This can be farther expanded upon by showing
students how we can manipulate equations to solve for the variable or
unknown.
Follow-up to Todays Lesson: Think: How can my students link this to
prior learning, make it relevant for them, and use it in the future?
Quick activity for review or building on todays learning that will deepen
student understanding and interconnect concepts (may be incorporated
tomorrow or throughout the unit)
Student will have to recognize balance and equality between numbers on
each side of the scale/equation to know if the sides are balanced or
equivalent.
Additional Information: Think: Reflective practice, next time what will I
do the same or differently? Did I learn anything from the lesson that will
help my students grow?
Any area or lesson component that may not have been covered by this
format that you think is vital to include in this lesson
After I have presented this lesson I will come back to my PowerPoint to see if
i need to make any corrections to the presentation. I will also reflect on the
steps of how i presented the lesson to see if there is a better way to
present the order of the lesson.
