Standard 3

Fostering of Relationships

1. Employ effective counseling and consultation skills with students, parents, colleagues,
administrators, and others.
2. Communicate effectively with parents, colleagues, students and administrators.
3. Counsel students in the areas of personal, social, academic, and career development.
4. Assist families in helping their children address the personal, social, and emotional
concerns and problems that may impede educational progress.
5. Implement developmentally appropriate counseling interventions with children and
adolescents.
6. Demonstrate the ability to negotiate and move individuals and groups toward
consensus or conflict resolution or both.
7. Refer students for specialized help when appropriate.
8. Value the well-being of the students as paramount in the counseling relationship.

1. Describe the context in which these artifacts were collected and identify the standard and
competency(s) the artifact represents.
The artifacts collected for standard 3, fostering of relationships were collected from my
practicum at South Tama County Elementary School and from a local community action agency.
The competencies that I will be addressing are 1, employ effective counseling and consultation
skills with students, parents, colleagues, administrators, and others; 3, counsel students in the
areas of personal, social, academic, and career development; 4, assist families in helping their
children address the personal, social, and emotional concerns and problems that may impede
educational progress; 5, implement developmentally appropriate counseling interventions with
children and adolescents; 7, refer students for specialized help when appropriate; and 8, value the
well-being of the students as paramount in the counseling relationship.
The individual counseling session was obtained during my practicum at South Tama County
Elementary. I recorded this individual session that I had with a student in the 4th grade. This
artifact addresses competencies 1, 5, and 8.
The parent conference reflection was obtained during through my practicum at South Tama
County Elementary. This reflection was completed after me and the current School Counselors
mad a meeting with a parent with concerns. This artifact addresses competencies 1, 4, and 8.
The County resource guide was obtained from a local community action agency. This list
contains resources for all of the North East Iowa counties for services that are offered in those
counties. This artifact addresses competency 7.
2. What do they demonstrate to you about your learning and mastery of the competencies which
fall under this standard?
I believe that the individual counseling video will show my ability to counsel and communicate
with students in an effective way. The video will show my knowledge of counseling skills and
my implement of developmentally appropriate counseling skills. This artifact also shows my
ability to build meaningful and trustworthy relationships with the students.
I believe the parent conference reflection will show my ability to form meaningful and helpful
relationships with parents and how I am able to employ effective consultation skills. This artifact
shows my ability to assist families when it comes to helping their children. This artifact also
shows how I value the well-being of the students that I work with.

I believe that the county resource list shows my knowledge of the services that are available in
out county and community and that I am able to connect families to these resources.
3. What do these items of evidence tell you about your overall progress toward your personal
goals and your growth as a professional school counselor?
I believe that these artifacts show my ability and effectiveness as a School Counselor. These
artifacts show that I have the knowledge and resources to communicate with students and their
families and connect them with services that they are in need of.
4. What are your plans for additional growth or improvement in this area?
My plans for growth and improvement in standard 3 are to continue to seek out professional
development opportunities. I will also continue to meet with students, their family and staff and
ask for feedback on ways that I can better serve their needs. I will continue to keep up to date
with local resources to make sure I am aware of local services, and also build relationships with
those local services.
