Implementation
Introduction to Lesson
1. Good morning, everyone! Today we are going to
talk about the things that a plant needs to live and grow. Who can tell me
some of the things that you all need to be healthy and grow? *Teacher
calls on students* Exactly! We all need food and water and a place to live
to be healthy. A plant needs many of the same things. A plant needs food,
air, and plenty of sunlight in order to grow. Today I am going to read a
book called How a Seed Grows by Helene J. Jordan. This book talks
about a plant and its life, and how it grows from a tiny seed into a
beautiful piece of nature. *Teacher reads book to students* Now class,
who remembers what the book said a plant needs to grow? *Calls on
necessary amount of students to get correct answer* Very good!

Remember, they need water, air, food, and sunlight in order to grow big
and strong. Today, we are going to take the things we learned and make a
beautiful piece of art. Are you all excited?!
A. Sequence of Activities
a. Introduce the lesson (look above)
b. Break the students up into five groups and have sit
at a table
c. Show on the whiteboard how to construct the art
project with the necessary pieces of paper and tape/magnets
d. Pass out all of the necessary material (paper,
markers, crayons, scissors, glue sticks) to all of the table groups
e. Have the students draw a sun, flower, and cloud on
separate pieces of paper
f. Instruct the students to use their scissors to cut out
their drawings
g. After students cut out their drawings, have them
glue them onto another piece of paper like was earlier instructed
h. Once students have glued the sun, cloud, and
flower onto their paper, have them pause and receive instruction. Not all
of the students will be done at the same time, so the ones that are done
early can color on their project.
i. Show the students how to spell the words
air, food, sunlight, and water by writing them on the whiteboard and
sounding and spelling them out together
j. Have the students label their artwork with their
newly formed words
k. Check in with each table to ensure all the students
are grasping and executing the art project
l. After the students have labeled their art, allow them
to color, read a book, etc. as the wish for 5-10 minutes
B. Closure
a. After all of the students have completed their art
project, have all of them leave their tables and join in a seated circle on
the rug. Use this opportunity to refresh again the necessities of life for a
plant. Ask students if they have any questions about the material they
learned today. If they do, ask other students if they are able to answer the
question. This allows the students to engage in a conversation that truly
tests their retention and knowledge of the material.

Fernandes 3
b. After answering any questions the students may
have, ask them what their favorite part of lesson was and what they liked
about it. This will allow the teacher to understand what students like which
parts of the curriculum, and how to better foster an environment that
addresses all the students needs.
c. Once finished, have the class assist you with
cleaning up their workstations and supplies, and have them all turn in
their pieces of art to you for you to hang around the classroom for the
remainder of the plant life unit.
C. Assessment
a. By monitoring and observing the students within
group discussions and their table groups, you will be able to understand
which students have a complete understanding of the material and which
students need more assistance.
b. By looking at the artwork the students produced,
TTW be able to assess which students put in the most effort into their
projects. TTW be able to see which students transferred their knowledge
from the group discussion/book onto the project.
D. Materials
a. How a Seed Grows by Helene J. Jordan
b. Construction paper in different colors
c. Scissors
d. Markers/Crayons
e. Large construction paper
f. Glue sticks
g. Whiteboard markers
