First Aid

In January, TY students had a day of basic first aid training with Gary. Students
found this day extremely beneficial and felt like they learned a lot during the day.
The day involved learning about emergencies that could happen to anyone at any
time, how to aid that person, how to get help in the most efficient way and also how
to help that person while help is on it's way.
After having this workshop the transition year students feel like every student
should have this training not only Transition Year students because it is so
beneficial. They feel like it should be brought in to every school because you are
learning valuable skills that will be a credit to you as you move on in life

Soar Workshop
On the 19th of January, Transition years had a soar workshop. This involved sharing
your feelings and personal experiences from your life. Everyone opened up
themselves and let everybody else in and everybody bonded as a group. This day
benefited everybody greatly and everyone got to open up in the safe environment
knowing everybody would be understanding and listen to anything they had to say.
Two people from Soar came in and done the workshop and made everyone feel so
relaxed and welcome. At the start they danced and the two people made sure
everyone knew that the workshop was fully confidential and not to be afraid to say

anything. As a group, everybody laughed and cried but overall enjoyed it very
much.

Deep Green
Deep Green is "a place where students can discuss the culture they love, hate or
love to hate. It's also a place where students who are budding writers of fiction,
poetry or graphic novels can display their work." It prides itself on being student
13

created, student run and student focused. It's for the pupils, by the pupils. We're an
outlet for creativity and expression, publishing everything from short stories, to
reviews, to news and opinion pieces, to poetry, to comics and music videos.
We have meetings every Monday and Thursday in the digital media lab, where we
sort out what's going up in the next few weeks, what kind of content we're looking
for that month and what we're writing or making ourselves. It also gives us the time
and environment to work on our own pieces of work.
I'd definitely recommend that anyone with even a little bit of interest in creative
writing or performing in videos come to at least one meeting or submit something
to the site, especially younger students.
You can find us at deepgreen.preswex.ie and in the digital media lab every Monday
and Thursday at half one.

Student Council
The student council have been very busy this year. We have accomplished so much
over the last few months an example of these is we changed the locks in the 6 th
year bathrooms, changed the soap in the bathrooms and made students more
aware of the rules regarding the confiscation of the uniform. We hope to open the
courtyard for senior students, get new stools for the science labs and hopefully
much more. We held an awareness day in the senior social area on the 2 nd March,
we had lots of music, sweets, fun and suggestions. We hope to achieve a lot more
and receive lots more suggestions in the months to come!

Music
A christmas carol concert was performed by the choir on 17 th December. This
incuded many famous christmas pieces including "Silent night" and "O come all ye
faithful". The choir also performed in a new years concert in St. Aidens cathedral in
Enniscorthy. 3rd and 6th year students are busy preparing for their practicals in April,
we wish them the very best of luck.

TY Play
14

The TY play was a roaring success this Christmas. The visiting schools gave
incredibly kind comments and our single night show was completely sold out. The
show we did was a pantomime of Sleeping Beauty, written by Tom O'Leary and
starring Emma Morris and Kaytlyn Fitzharris Byrne. A big thanks to Paul Walsh, our
director, who's endless encouragement and cheer pulled us through the production
and turned it into a wonderful experience for us all.
Because of how well the play went, we'll be taking it to a competition in
Kilmuckridge soon and putting on another night show. The TY's are all incredibly
excited for this, as well as for the Hits of the Musicals play we'll be doing in early
May. This play will include songs from Grease, Les Misrables, Annie, Frozen, Beauty
and the Beast and Mamma Mia, and will be performed with the CBS.

1916
Like many other schools, Presentation Secondary has been working hard to
celebrate the centenary celebrations of 1916. On 7 th of March, two teachers and
three students travelled to the RDS in Dublin to collect a copy of the Proclamation of
the Irish Republic. Ryan Tubridy, the chairman of the Thomas F. Magher Foundation,
and the president himself all spoke about the unification of Irish people, and the
education of another generation of Irish students. It was a wonderful experience for
all.
On 15th of March, at 12 pm, the student council gathered to watch the proclamation
read out by Georgia Mai Murphy, a TY student, while the same was done by schools
all around Ireland. A video of this will be uploaded to the school twitter account,
@PresWex.

No Uniform Day
15

The whole school participated in a no uniform day on 26 th February to raise funds to

send two of our fifth year students, Aoife Doyle and Heather Mc Grath, to Lourdes.
We raised 1308.49 from the new uniform day. They will be going on 17 th May and
returning on 22nd May. Well done girls and we wish you the best of luck!

The Saint Vincent De Paul

Committee

Recently the school's Saint Vincent De Paul committee, The Nano Foundation, have
been spotted selling pins from the Thomas F.Magher Foundation downtown and in
the Senior Social area! This was a wonderful way to show Irish pride and donate to a
wonderful charity because it demotes a small Irish flag and says ' Pride Respect
Peace'.
They also started the paired reading project with the primary
school in the Faythe. This be going on every Thursday til the end of the year. It is a
lot of fun because it feels like the children really benefit from it!
There was also a uniform drive organised by the committee!
There was a bin and poster placed in the senior social area and whoever could
donate did and the girls and Ms.Dooley were very grateful for it!
The committee are eagerly awaiting the the presentation in Kilkenny in
April.
You can follow them on Twitter @NanoFoundation5 !

Build A Bank
At the beginning of the year the transition years were interviewed by the Wexford
AIB Bank Manager to be members of the 'Build A Bank' team. 6 students were
chosen to be on the team. In December they held a surprise party for the transition
years to launch their bank 'Bank To The Future'. The team had to submit their
business plan after the Christmas holidays and then the aim was to open as many
accounts as possible and to educate fellow students about banking. On February
24th the bank team set off the Leopardstown to compete in the regional finals where
they presented their bank. They got shortlisted but unfortunately didnt get through
to the nationals. The bank is open every Tuesday in the senior social area during
lunch time where you can open a bank account or lodge money into your bank
account.

Literacy Week Report

Monday: The big picture quiz took place on Monday the 29 th and was a huge success
as a there was a big interest in it as it brought back some childhood good memories
of reading as a child.
Tuesday: Tom Mooney well known rom the 'Wexford Echo' newspaper visited the
school and talked about what its like to be a journalist and publisher in the upstairs
library. It was very interesting and enjoyed by everyone.
Wednesday: Amy and Leona from gave a brilliant presentation on newly released
books to offer on sale in The Book Centre. It ranged from fantasy to contemporary
novels for young teens. Over 150 worth of books were ordered! It is no shock to us
that this has now become an annual event and students are very looking forward to
next year!
Thursday: This day was World Book Day in which everyone in the school was were
invited to dress up as their favorite fictional character. We had many amazing
costumes but the winning costumes had to be Voldemort (by Rachael Murphy) from
the seniors and Skullduggery Pleasant (by Aisling Hickey) from the juniors. The
teachers dressed up too and it was lots of fun for the students to guess who they
were.
Monday: A game of quidditch was had out on the green (organized by Professor
Rolston and Lacey). The game was equipped with real goalposts and a flying snitch!
This was great fun to watch and even more to play!
We'd like to thank Ms.G.Power for such an amazing week!

Greenwaves Radio
In September last year, an entirely new crew of Transition Years was formed to take
over Greenwaves Radio, Presentation Secondary School's unique radio show. The
show was very successful in its first year of running, and the new crew were
determined it would be even better this year. Many original ideas were accumulated
to make Greenwaves Radio interesting and relatable to its listeners, such as a 'Pres
Problems' feature where listeners could submit their dilemmas to be solved live on
air by the presenters. The radio's website was also reinvented to make it more
attractive and user friendly.
On Friday the 29th of January, after weeks of preparation, the first radio show was
aired in the lunch hall. Brilliant performances were given by Rachel Grace and Grace
Murphy, alongside fascinating interviews including one with two French Exchange
students. Listeners were also given the chance to win a prize by guessing which
teachers had written the New Years Resolutions that were read out on the show.
Overall, the show ran very smoothly and the radio crew were delighted with the
positive reaction they received from the students who listened in.
On Thursday the 10th of March, the second Greenwaves Radio show was aired, just
as successfully as the first. Fantastic musical performances were given by Rachel
19

Kinsella, Grace Murphy, Ciara Forde, and Esther Nwosocha. Two Transition Years
spoke about the interesting experiences they had with their work placements in a
pre recorded interview. Also featured in the show was a scavenger hunt-style game
titled 'Shamrock Hunt', where listeners were instructed to go around the school and
round up as many shamrocks (previously hidden by members of the crew) as they
could, in the hope of winning a hamper. All the crew's hard work paid off in the end
in the form of another brilliant radio show that kept listeners' attention.
So far, Greenwaves Radio show has continued to provide the students of
Presentation with up to date news, informative interviews, wonderful musical
performances and so much more. Long may it last!
