Using Windows 8.1

Windows 8.1 can be confusing at first,


since the interface has changed so
much. You'll need to know how to
navigate theStart screen, as well as
theDesktop. Although the Desktop
looks very similar to previous versions of
Windows, it has one major change:
TheStart menuhas been removed.

Using Windows 8.1


1.Click anywhere on thelock screento
unlock the computer.

2.Your user account name and picture will
appear. Type yourpassword, and then
pressEnterto sign in. Alternatively, you
can press theback arrowto select a
different user.

3.Start:This switches to the Start screen.
If you're already on the Start screen, it will
open the most recent app.

Shutdown your
computer
Hover the mouse in the lower-right corner to
access theCharms bar, then selectSettings.

Working with files


1.Open File :Click theFile
Explorericon on the taskbar, or doubleclick any folder on your desktop. A File
Explorer window will open.

Basic navigation

If you see the file you want, you can


double-click it. Otherwise, you can use
theNavigation paneon the left side of
the window to select a different location.

2.Deleting files:
Windows 8 uses aRecycle Binto prevent
you from accidentally deleting files. When
you delete a file, it is simply moved to the
Recycle Bin. If you change your mind, you
can move the file back to its original
location. If you're sure you want to
permanently delete the file, you will need
toempty the Recycle Bin.

To delete a file

Click, hold, and drag the file onto


theRecycle Binicon on theDesktop.
Alternatively, you can select the file and
then press theDeletekey.

Right-click theRecycle Binicon, and


selectEmpty Recycle Bin. All files in the
Recycle Bin will be permanently deleted.

Working with Desktop


apps

While many applications run exclusively in the Start


screen, you'll also need to know how to open apps from
the Desktop view. If you've used previous versions of
Windows before, this should feel more familiar.

Open an app on the

There are two ways to open an app in
Desktop view:
1. Click theapp iconon thetaskbar.

Pin apps to the taskbar


1. Right-click anywhere on
theStartscreen, and a menu will
appear at the bottom. Click theAll
appsbutton.
