Bab 6 - Exercise Chapter 6 Torsion

This document contains 10 exercises involving the calculation of torque, shear stress, angle of twist, and diameters of shafts based on given parameters like length, diameter, torque applied, modulus of rigidity, and maximum allowable twist. The exercises involve circular shafts made of materials like steel and calculations are to be done for determining shear stress, torque, power and diameters that satisfy given twist requirements based on the theory of torsion.

EXERCISE CHAPTER 6- TORSION

1. A shaft 50 mm diameter and 0.7 m long is subjected to a torque of

1200 Nm. Calculate the shear stress and the angle of twist. Take G =
90 GPa.
2. If a twisting moment of 1100 N m is impressed upon a 4.4-cm-diameter
shaft, what is the maximum shearing stress developed? Also, what is the
angle of twist in a 150-cm length of the shaft? The material is steel for
which G = 85 GPa.
3. A hollow 3-m-long steel shaft must transmit a torque of 25 kN m. The
total angle of twist in this length is not to exceed 2.5 and the allowable
shearing stress is 90 MPa. Determine the inside andoutside diameters of
the shaft if G = 85 GPa.
4. If a solid circular shaft of 3.2-cm diameter is subject to a torque T of 300 N
m resulting in an angle of twist of 4.5 in a 2-m length, determine the
shear modulus of the material.
5. What is the minimum diameter of a solid steel shaft that will not twist through
more than 3 in a 6-m length when subjected to a torque of 12 kNm? What
maximum shearing stress is developed? Use G = 83 GPa.
6. A shaft with a diameter of 150 mm and length of 2 m generated 45 kW on
500 r.p.m cycle. Calculate the maximum shear stress.
7. If the twisting moment of 10KNm is impressed upon a 130 mm diameter
shaft, what is the maximum shearing stress developed ? Also, what is the
angle of twist in a 2 m length of the shaft? The material is steel for which G
= 12 MN/m2 . Assume it is entirely elastic action.
8. A shaft 200 mm diameter and 1m length is transferring 50 kW at 160
r.p.m.
Calculate:
i. Maximum shear stress
ii. Angle of twist in radian
iii. Shear stress at the distance radial, r = 50 mm ,G = 80GN/m
9. A solid shaft consists of two parts that are part AB and BC with the torque
at the end of BC at the value of 100Nm is shown in Figure below.
Calculate the maximum shear stress and the total of twist angle that
occurred if the modulus of rigidity, G = 75 GN/m 2.
