Berry Extracts Properties

presenceofantioxidants,ascorbicacid,andantitumoragentsintheberriesoftheinvasiveplant
Elaeagnusumbellata(AutumnOlive)andthenativeplantLinderabenzoin(Spicebush).The
Agrobacteriumtumefacienspotatodiskassaywasusedtodeterminethepresenceofantitumoragents
intheextract.Inthisassay,itwasdifficulttodetermineiftheberriesofeachspecieshadantitumorous
propertiesduetothelimitedtrials.Asaresult,thereisnoconclusivedataastowhethertheseberries
areantitumorous.Thephenolindophenoldyemethodwasusedtodeterminetheamountofascorbic
acidinAutumnOliveberries.5.9mgofascorbicacidwasdetectedper100gofAutumnOliveberries,
comparabletolevelsfoundinapples.However,duetothedarkcoloroftheSpicebushextract,similar
testscouldnotbeconductedonthistypeofberry.Totestforthepresenceofantioxidants,theDPPH
methoddeterminedthatbothAutumnOliveberriesandSpicebushberriescontainedapproximatelyfour
timestheantioxidantpowerofBHT,acommonfoodpreservative.
