shape, color, texture, weight, flexibility, attraction to magnets, or ability to sink or float)
and classify objects based on similar properties.
Goal/ Concepts to be explored:
Students will be able to use their scientific inquired to examine pumpkins.
Students will be able to illustrate their observations.
Students will be able to label or write a sentence to demonstrate their observation.
Content/ Rationale:
This lesson is appropriate for kindergarten students because the students will be learning
about pumpkins. The students will study pumpkins. Children will use their scientific
observations to create a flipbook of their observation.
Professional Resources:
Coaching Teacher and pacing guide
Materials:
Pumpkin Investigation Anchor Chart
Markers
24 Flipbooks
Crayons
Pencils

Procedures:
Introduction: I will transition the students from whole group to small literacy groups. I
will first introduce each activity in the four literacy groups.
1. Kehn- Flipbook using scientific observation
2. King- FMJs
3. Brant- Sentence structure (Students will be constructing sentences)
4. Read to Self- reading just right books, poems, etc.
T: Teacher will introduce the Flipbook the students will be creating in my group. Tell the
class we will be using our scientific observation to create a book.
T: In Ms. Kings group students will be writing in their Family Messages Journal.
Students will write about Mr. Sims carving our class pumpkin.
T: In Mrs. Brants group students will work on sentence structure.
T: Read to Self- Students will read just right books, poems, and working with magnet
letters.
T: At my group I will first instruct the students to grab a pencil and write their names on
the back of their book.
T: Today we will be creating flipbooks on what we observed (saw) during our
investigation.
T: Review the anchor chart we created as a class.
T: Boys and girls I want you to write on each flap of the book I saw a pumpkin.
S: Students will create their individual flipbook, writing on each flap. I saw a pumpkin..
T: On the last flap students will write a full sentences. Example: I saw a pumpkin float. I
want the children to write a sentence or label their picture. Students will also illustrate
a picture of what they observed. Each group will construct their own flipbook.
S: Students will transition into the next literacy groups.
Differentiated Teaching Strategies:
As a class we will discuss our investigation of different pumpkins. Teacher will
encourage and engage all students in contributing to the anchor chart. Then the students
will take their observation and create a flipbook based on their observations. Child will
be illustrating their observation. Students will also be encouraged to label or write a full
sentence of their observation.
Assessment:
Students will have created a flipbook based on their observation. Students will have
written what they observed. Students will be able to write what they observe and
illustrate their observation. Students will be encouraged to label or write sentences. I will
encourage students to write what they hear as well. I will assess students on creating a
flipbook. Based on their effort I will assess whether the students understood the activity. I
can also assess students being sounds based off of their writing.
