Montage
Description:
A spiritually-themed, inspirational message based on Doctrine and Covenants 50:24 about
continuing in the light of God.
Date:
February 11, 2016
Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 section 3
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
To create a spiritual poster montage using type and two or more images. Use a layer mask to blend
the images.
Process:
To begin, I used Adobe Photoshop to merge three different photos together, all of them freely
sourced from http://www.unsplash.com. I needed to adjust the lighting and saturation for all of
them to match. For instance, I turned the background photos saturation almost all the way down
to get rid of most of its color, but to preserve the sunlight rays. I wanted to place most emphasis
on the phrase perfect day, and I helped achieve that through making the path photo lead
into it. The path is meant to represent our path in life, however I increased the emphasis
on the color in order to suggest that there is something divine involved in our lives,
something that we may not altogether see immediately. The light gets brighter
as we head toward God and follow light.

Program(s)/Tools:
Microsoft Word
Objectives:
Use Microsoft Word to create a benefit event poster that a company could use to attract others to
the event.
Process:
For this advertisement, I explored the design possibilities from Microsoft Word 2011. I used
basic rectangle shapes for the borders, and circle/rectangle shapes for the music note, and so
that made the process rather tedious. It required hiding the shapes around it to produce the right
curvature. The title shows a diagonal alignment, matching the angle of the image of the musical
instruments. The body copy is right-aligned with the orange border. I used a simple design to
communicate a clear message.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Design a brochure of some kind using Adobe InDesign. Create a new logo using Adobe Illustrator.
Include at least four images, and use text-wrapping around at least one image.
Process:
I used Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, and Photoshop to complete this project. First I created the logo
by tracing an image of a French horn with the pen tool on Illustrator, and came to a point where
I was satisfied with the outcome. I then took it into InDesign where I had created a common
duplex layout for my brochure. I decided to just place it in the front cover. I then added my
body copy throughout the brochure and added the color backgrounds. The composer
profiles were added after editing them on Photoshop to just preserve their outlines.

Description:
A fictional notice for BYU-I students that Student Support is offering free bread in the
Manwaring Center lobby.
Date:

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills. Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then
incorporate the colors into the layout. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download
it. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE. Size
and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout. Use layers to design text, and repeating
graphic elements in Photoshop.
Process:
After taking a photo in a well-lit (sunlight) area in my apartment, I entered it into Photoshop
and adjusted its levels, vibrance, and color. I also adjusted areas of focus with the sharpen
tool and blur tool. The color scheme was meant to encourage the reader to feel the
want to get some bread. Unity was created in the image by repeating the two
opaque triangles as well as the rectangle patterns.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Use Adobe InDesign to create a grayscale flier for a graduation event, with the
images and text provided. Establish the layout and follow basic design rules.
Process:
For this project, most of the elements such as the text and pictures, were already provided. I
needed to design my own layout using the tools provided. I began by creating the shapes of the
rectangles, and aligning them together in a way that negative space could freely travel around
them. Using simple shape and pen tools, I created the graduation cap designs. Overall, the design
attracts attention through its diagonal alignment and use of flow between the irregular
diamond shapes.

Logos
Description:
A fictional company logo for The Masters Piano Repair & Tuning.
Date:

Course/Instructor:
COMM 130 section 3
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will
appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs. Use only the
Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos. Refine one logo with variations for color.
Process:
I focused on keeping the idea simple, and on making the company logo easily recognizable with
the keyboard shape behind the title. Effort was put into making the type easily legible even when
placed in front of lines and other colors. The title typeface suggests a creative and graceful
approach to taking care of pianos. I created the keyboard shape using rectangles and lines,
adjusting the opacity of the strokes to create contrast to the black keys and to aid the
legibility of the title.
Letterhead
Description:

Course/Instructor:

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator
Objectives:
Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs. Dont use photos or live trace. Use the new
logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Include contact information:
name, address, phone, website, and email on each piece.
Process:
After creating the sound waveform design with the pen tool, I chose a simple color scheme (complementary) to roughly represent the two halves of the waveform. The logo is built aroud degrees of opacity. I added lines of decreasing opacity in the right border to represent samples of
the waveform. The title typeface is sort of a digitized font in attempt to match the message.
The letterhead includes the contact information on the right border, and the business
card contains a brief company description.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and of CSS.
Process:
I used Adobe InDesign to create and make changes to the logo design for the web page. To
maintain the same color scheme throughout, I used Adobe Photoshop to extract the hex codes
from the logos colors so the rest of the web page would match. I focused on keeping it relatively
conservative by not having too many shapes to distract from the logo.
