COMMUNITY MEETING FOR HAZARD MITIGATION PLANNING PROCESS PLANNED

FOR May 11

Plan will be updated to reduce risks of loss

(NEW ORLEANS) -- The City of New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness
will host the third community meeting for the development of the 2010 Orleans Parish Hazard
Mitigation Plan. The public is invited to attend.

The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, at Dillard University, 2601 Gentilly Blvd., DUICEF
Building, Room 106. This meeting will provide the New Orleans community a chance to discuss the
goals, objectives, and mitigation actions for the 2010 Orleans Parish Hazard Mitigation Plan.

As part of the 2010 Orleans Parish Hazard Mitigation Plan Update the goals, objectives, and mitigation
actions from the 2005 Orleans Parish Hazard Mitigation plan must be reviewed and updated. The goals
and objectives guide the selection of actions to mitigate and reduce potential losses from each identified
hazard.

Planning efforts for the 2010 Orleans Parish Hazard Mitigation Plan are coordinated with public
agencies, private organizations, and the community to prepare for and minimize the impacts of hazards.
The Planning Team for the Hazard Mitigation Plan will meet at 1 p.m. Monday, May 10, in the
Homeland Security Conference Room, Suite 9W03 in New Orleans City Hall, 1300 Perdido St. This
meeting will bring the planning team together to evaluate goals, objectives, and mitigation actions for
the updated plan.  The planning team includes representatives from local and regional agencies,
business and development organizations, academic institutions, and neighborhood groups.

The Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires that each Parish in Louisiana submit a new updated plan for
approval within five (5) years of the previously approved plan.  The new updated plan must be adopted
by the City Council and also approved by the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency
Preparedness (GOHSEP) and FEMA to be eligible for hazard mitigation funding.  The plan will identify
and assess risks from natural and man-made hazards, set goals for mitigation, and create mitigation
actions designed to be implemented over the next five years.
