Functions of Dispersing Agent

Dispersing agents are used in disperse dyeing to ensure uniform and trouble-free dyeing. Disperse dyes are insoluble in water and form aqueous dispersions. Dispersing agents help reduce the particle size of the dye and maintain a fine, stable dispersion throughout the dyeing process. They assist in dye particle size reduction, enable the dye to be formed into a powder, and facilitate reconversion of the powder into the required dispersion for dyeing. Some common dispersing agents used include soap powder, Turkey Red oil, alkyl aryl sulphonates, and alkali sulphates.

Dispersing Agent

Disperse dyes (http://textilelearner.blogspot.com/2012/01/printing-on-polyester-f abric-with.html) are

insoluble in water and f orm aqueous dispersion in water. At f irst these dye molecules are f ormed as large
particles and they are made smaller particles by grinding. But as they are water insoluble, they will give
uneven dyeing if they are directly used in dye bath. So to ensure unif orm and trouble f ree dyeing the dye
should be present in dye bath in an unif orm and very f ine f orm and should give an stable dispersion. T his is
the reason f or which a special chemical is used in dye bath named dispersing agent. T hey should be
ef f ective under dyeing conditions, stable to hard water, high temperature and other dyeing assistants.
For example, soap powder, Turkey Red oil, alkali sulphates, alkyl aryl sulphonates etc. are some surf ace
active agents which are recommended as dispersing agents in disperse dyeing.
