Teacher'S Name: Grade: 2 Subject: Math LESSON TOPIC: Odd and Even Numbers UNIT TOPIC: Addition and Subtraction

This lesson plan is for a 2nd grade math class on odd and even numbers within 20. The teacher will introduce the concepts of odd and even numbers using color tiles. Students will identify numbers as odd or even by determining if sets have leftovers or pairs. They will recognize patterns that even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8 while odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9. Students will complete activities classifying sets and numbers as odd or even and counting by 2s to reinforce these concepts.

Color tiles

Hook Students will be given 1 color tile and asked if they can make a pair with the one
tile. Students will likely answer that they cannot because they learned in the previous
days lesson that a pair is a group of two. I will then explain that having one item is odd
because it is a group of 1. I will then give each student a second tile, and ask once again
if it is a pair. Students will likely answer yes because they learned that a pair is two. I will
then explain that since a pair could be made, they have an even number.
Content

I will write the number 1 on a mini white board accompanied by the word on
and a picture of one circle. I will then write the number 2 accompanied by two
circles and the word even next to it.

Students will be asked if they know the difference between even and odd
numbers. I will then tell them that when there are groups of objects and
every object has a pair, the group is even. When there is a group of objects
and there is a left over, the group is odd.

Students will be given more tiles, one at a time and determine if the groups
are even or odd. I will write on the numbers, whether it is odd or even, and a
picture on the board for students to follow along.

Guided Practice

As a group, under my guidance, students will complete student activity book

page 19. Emphasis will be placed on the fact that when there are leftovers,
sets are odd, but when there are many pairs, the sets are even.

Students will be asked if they could count by 2s to help them determine if the
pairs are odd or even. They will likely recognize if there are multiples of 2,4,6,
or 8, the pairs are even. This will lead into the fact that if numbers end in
0,2,4,6, or 8, they are even. If they end in 1,3,5,7, or 9, they are odd.

We will turn to page 20. As a group, we students will work to distinguish even
and odd numbers based on group pairings as well as the digits. After the first
four problems are complete, they will be asked if they notice a correlation
between the digit in each problem and whether or not the set is even or odd.

* Multiple approaches: Students who are more advanced learners may be encouraged
to complete problems on their own if they demonstrate a strong understanding while
answering questions and completing the first few problems in the student activity book.
Stronger learners may also be given different colored tiles to make pairs while students
who are struggling will be given tiles of the same color.

Independent Practice Students will complete a cutting and pasting activity that requires them to
put numbers in order counting by 2s. To further reinforce this concept,
students will fill in the blanks of missing numbers as they count by 2.
