Statisticsprojectt

This document describes a project analyzing data on 45 Canadian students. It includes a quantitative variable of student height and a qualitative variable of dominant hand. A histogram of height shows a symmetrical, normal distribution with a peak between 165-170 cm. A pie chart of dominant hand shows most students are right-handed (88.9%) with fewer left-handed (4.4%) or ambidextrous (6.7%). Calculations of the mean, median, standard deviation and IQR for height indicate no outliers and a small gap between the mean and median, consistent with the symmetrical distribution. A boxplot of height further supports the normal distribution and small mean-median gap.

Unit 3 Project

30 Points
Describe the background of your data here:
These are the descriptions of 45 Canadian students.

Variable 1 (Quantitative variable)

Height

Variable 2 (Qualitative variable)

Dominant Hand (Left, Right, or Ambidextrous)

Make sure all graphs are titled and labeled properly.

1. Make a histogram of the quantitative variable of your data. What is the shape of this
histogram? What do you conclude based on the shape of the histogram?
***Key: Height is in centimeters. The shape of the histogram is pretty much symmetrical,
theres a peak in the middle and isnt skewed to the left or right. The heights of the students are
pretty well distributed with the exception of the 165-170 cm group, where the peak is.

2. Make a pie chart or a bar graph of the qualitative variable of your data. Justify your graph
choice. Describe what you see in the chart/graph.
I used the pie chart because it is the best graph at describing parts to a whole. According to the
pie chart, a vast percentage of the students are right handed (88.9%). Then ambidextrous
students make up a slightly larger portion of population (6.7%) than left handed students (4.4%).

3. In MTB, calculate the following for the quantitative variable: Mean, Median, standard deviation,
IQR. Are there outliers?
Mean= 169.81 Median= 169 Standard Deviation= 9.97 IQR= 14.5 There are no outliers.

4. IS there a gap between the mean and the median? Explain how this result makes sense.
There is a very tiny gap (.81). This makes sense because in the middle theres a peak. A large
number of the students are between 165 and 170 cm tall. This makes the average or mean
closer to the median. There also arent any outliers so no data can skew the mean and median
to the left or right.
7.

Make a boxplot. How does the boxplot support your previous conclusions?

The Boxplot supports my conclusions for it shows how symmetrical the data is. It also shows how the
mean and median have only a tiny gap.
