Response to Rainbow Body composed by Christopher Theofanidis
While I cannot claim to have ever experienced the level of divine realization that inspired
Christopher Theofanidis to compose his piece, Rainbow Body, I can discuss the discovery of
emotion that the piece evoked in me. Often, one may experience chills when hearing something
that provokes strong emotion or introspective thought. When I preformed Rainbow Body with
the Philharmonic Orchestra in DeVos Hall, however, the sensation I experienced can be more
accurately described as an internal warmth. The music we created that morning was both familiar
and foreign to me. I had heard each passage many times before, and yet each swell in the melody
lead me to discover new meaning and context to notes that my ears had come so accustomed to.
This renewed recognition of the repertoire inspired an unprecedented warmth and admiration for
the ability of those around me. Their capability to convey such emotion from printed ink on
paper, I thought, was something we should share and celebrate.
My sentiments regarding Rainbow Body stem not from a particular chord progression
or from its descendance from a 12th century religious chant, but more from an uncommon
technique utilized towards the end of the piece. After the beginning statement begins to build
once more, there is a climactic moment in which the cymbal crashes and the entire orchestra lets
out a tumultuous whoop which revives itself over and over until the end of the piece. These
shouts of elation accurately convey the discovery and celebration of ability and execution that
Rainbow Body inspires.

We do not describe discovery exclusively as the initial unearthing of thoughts and ideas,
but also as the development of ideas and thoughts over time, perhaps with the assistance of
others. Like many elements of life, discovery is a process. This process is affected by ones
experience and willingness to accept and analyze the emotions that these experiences invoke.
When Theofanidis composed Rainbow Body, he did not do so in order to inspire said notions
in us, but the way in which we interpret his music is what makes discovery such a powerful and
unique part of our lives.
