How can I, Youssef Maharem, benefit
from the education at AUC?
From the cars we drive everyday to work, to the mobile phones we use to communicate, to the houses we find shelter and tranquility in, there is no doubt that engineering is engrained in every aspect of our life. There is no device, product, service, or system that hasnt been touched by engineering in some way. To me, engineering is the use of knowledge, design, and innovation to make something that would benefit and satisfy a general need of the people. It is a never-ending process, one that is constantly evolving and adapting according to the desires of the dynamic world we live in today. In essence, engineers are problem-solvers and that is what I dream and aspire to be; an engineer. Seeing how Egypt lacks vital infrastructure and technological advancement, it has become my main motive for wanting to study at your esteemed university, at a much higher level than that is existent in the rest of Egypt. It is my goal to benefit my people with the knowledge, experience, and skills I have gained, in a sustainable manner that well suits my countrys resources. It is in the essence of engineering itself, the scientific art of developing the present, and building the future. Since childhood, I have had a deep interest in mathematics and the sciences. In grade ten, I was nicknamed Mr. Answer Key as my chemistry teacher used to grade my papers first and use that as a mark scheme. I was also asked to tutor younger students. As an IB student, I am currently enjoying my physics, chemistry and mathematics classes, especially topics pertaining to calculus and vectors, and would love to pursue further studies in these fields. In order to supplement my physics education, I have enrolled at two workshops at the MIT-affiliated FabLab. The first is an Electronics 101 workshop that builds on what I have learnt from school with a more practical, hands-on approach and takes the matter into more depth, covering areas such as BJT switches and monostables. The second is a 3D CAD workshop where I learned the basics of making gear trains using Solidworks. Both workshops have given me valuable insight and will significantly assist me in my field of study. I would like to continue my engineering and science education and after evaluating university options in Egypt, I have concluded that studying at AUC will allow me to achieve my future goals; AUC is the place for me.
