Water Filter Activity

This document provides instructions for students to create a basic water filter using various materials like sand, gravel, and paper towels. It outlines the goals of the activity which are for students to work together using their knowledge of separating mixtures. It describes the process which involves setting up a filter using different filter materials in a plastic water bottle, pouring dirty water through the filter, and observing the results. Students are asked to document the process and materials used, explain how it works, and discuss questions about water filtration and treatment.

Creating A Water Filter

The purpose of this activity is for students to work

together and, using their knowledge of separating
mixtures, create a basic water filter. In this lesson
students will use their Ipads to take photos, create short
videos, and use the Ipad slideshow application Puppet
Edu to create a digital presentation of their work. In this
digital presentation students will need to include:
A description of the experiment.
Your hypothesis, the dependent and independent
variable.
Show the materials you are using.
Explain the procedure for how you made your
water filter.
Discuss what you observed as the dirty water
was being filtered (show the water before and
after).
Provide answers to the discussion questions.
By the end of the lesson students should be able to
demonstrate how they made their water filter, describe
the different filtration processes, explain why separation
techniques are so important in the world today.

Materials (Per Group):

X1 Ipad
X1/2 cup of coarse sand
X1/2 cup of fine sand
X1/2 cup of rocks/gravel
Paper towel
X1 Cup of dirty water

x15 750L water bottles cut in half

Elastic band

Procedure: Dont forget to record this process!!

1. Once you have answered the above questions assign
ONE member from each group to collect:
Half a cup of coarse sand
Half a cup of fine sand
Half a cup of rocks/gravel
2. You will notice that the water bottle has been cut in
half. Using an elastic band and paper towel seal the
top of the bottle as this is going to be the bottom of
your filter.
3. Place the top half of
the bottle upside
down into the
bottom half (refer to
figure 1).
4. Once you have
sealed the top of
bottle with the
elastic band & paper
towel you may now
pour in the fine sand, coarse sand, and rocks/gravel.
Look at figure 1 to see which order to pour the
materials in.
5. Finally, clean the dirty water by pouring into the top
of the filter and observe what happens. You may
want to re-filter the water more than once.

Discussion Questions:
1. In this activity identify the filter/s, filtrate, sediment.

2. Why do we use a range of different materials to filter
the dirty water rather than just one material? What
could be some of the benefits of using a combination
of rocks, coarse sand, fine sand, and paper towel to
filter the water?

3. Is the filtered water safe to drink? Why? Why not?

4. What else could we do to further clean/sterilize the

water?

Extension Questions:
Do some research on the Water Treatment Process and
answer the following questions. Try to include your
answers in your digital presentation as well as the space
provided below.
5. What do the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines
(2011) tell us?

6. What is another process we can use is the source

water is too hard or salty?

7. Create a flowchart showing the 7 stages of the water

treatment process used to purify drinking water in
Australia and briefly describe each of these stages. A
template is provided on the following page (you can
create your own flow chart if you choose).
