The Eurocodes Should We Adopt Them?: Comité Européen de Normalisation)

The Eurocodes are the standard codes of practice employed for structural design in European Union countries. All EU member countries have replaced their national codes with the Eurocodes, though each can implement nationally determined parameters. This raises the question of whether countries that previously adopted codes from EU members, like Nigeria's adoption of British standards, should now adopt the Eurocodes. Since the UK adopted the Eurocodes, the British standards have been superseded and are no longer updated to reflect recent research. Other countries like Singapore and Hong Kong that used British standards have now adopted the Eurocodes.

THE EUROCODES;

SHOULD WE ADOPT THEM?

The Eurocodes are the standard codes of

practice employed for the structural design
of civil engineering structures in
European Union member countries and
are written by the CEN (Comit Europen
de Normalisation).
All EU member
countries have replaced their national
codes of practice with the Eurocodes. Each
member country is only allowed to
implement its nationally determined
parameters via a national annex. This
raises a question of what happens in
countries that have adopted design codes
from one of these EU member countries?
Should they adopt the Eurocode too? This
is a question that needs to be answered in
Nigeria. As a country we have adopted the
British standards for design of civil
engineering structures since we gained
independence as a sovereign state. The
British standards have been updated from
time to time in the past by the British
Standard Institution (BSI) to provide
updated information as revealed by current
experimental findings and design practice.
Hence we were up-to-date as per design
practice and information. However, since
the adoption of the Eurocodes in the UK,
most of the British standards have been
superseded and phased out in the United
Kingdom. Hence the BSI no longer
updates the British Standard to reflect
recent research findings and improvements
in design practice. Rather it publishes

information to complement the Eurocodes

via the UK national annexes. Table 1

shows the superseded British standards

and the superseding Eurocode document.

Countries such as Singapore and Hong

Kong which have previously adopted the
British standard have currently adopted the
Eurocodes.
