Axial and Radial Flow Turbines Solved Problems Ragaza

1. The gas velocity at the nozzle outlet is 695.5 m/s, the whirl component at the rotor inlet is 695.5 m/s, and the turbine work output is 9354.8 kW. 2. Given the nozzle efflux angle is 68°, stagnation temperature of 800°C, stagnation pressure of 4 bar, exhaust pressure of 1 bar, and efficiency of 0.85, the work done is calculated as well as the constant axial velocity through the stage. 3. Given the same inlet conditions as problem 2, the total-to-total efficiency and degree of reaction are determined.

Axial Flow Turbines

1. Consider an impulse gas turbine in which gas enters at pressure = 5.2 bar and leaves at
1.03 bar. The turbine inlet temperature is 1000K and isentropic efficiency of the turbine is
0.88. If mass flow rate of air is 28 kg/s, nozzle angle at outlet is 57 o, and absolute velocity
of gas at inlet is 140 m/s, determine the gas velocity at nozzle outlet, whirl component at
rotor inlet and turbine work output. Take, =1.33, and Cpg =1.147 kJ/kgK

2. In a single-stage gas turbine, gas enters and leaves in axial direction. The nozzle efflux
angle is 68, the stagnation temperature and stagnation pressure at stage inlet are 800C
and 4 bar, respectively. The exhaust static pressure is 1 bar, total-to-static efficiency is
0.85, and mean blade speed is 480 m/s, determine the work done and the axial velocity
which is constant through the stage Assume =1.33, and Cpg = 1.147 kJ/kgK.

3. In a single-stage gas turbine, gas enters and leaves in axial direction. The nozzle efflux
angle is 68, the stagnation temperature and stagnation pressure at stage inlet are 800C
and 4 bar, respectively. The exhaust static pressure is 1 bar, total-to-static efficiency is
0.85, and mean blade speed is 480 m/s, determine the total to total efficiency and the
degree of reaction.

4. A single-stage axial flow gas turbine with equal stage inlet and outlet velocities has the
following design data based on the mean diameter:

Calculate the rotor-blade gas angles, the degree of reaction, blade loading coefficient, and
power output.

5. From the previous problem, determine the total nozzle throat area if the throat is situated
at the nozzle outlet and the nozzle loss coefficient is 0.05.
