The Classification of Rocks
_____________________________________________________________________________
Central Focus/Big Idea: Rocks
Subject of this lesson: There are so many rocks on Earth and they are all different, but there are
ways to classify the different types of rocks.
Grade Level: 4th Grade
NC Essential Standard(s):
4.P.2: Understand the composition and properties of matter before and after they undergo a
change or interaction.
4.P.2.3: Classify rocks as metamorphic, sedimentary or igneous based on their composition, how
they are formed and the processes that create them.
Next Generation Science Standard(s): 5-PS1-3: Make observations and measurements to
identify materials based on their properties.
21st Century Skills: Flexibility & Adaptability 4 th Grade Outcome: students can show that
different processes of science are ongoing, but the theories of these processes can change;
Initiative & Self-Direction 4th Grade Outcome: students can conduct investigations from
questions they have created themselves
Academic Language Demand
Language Function: Students are going to analyze the rocks that they are given at the
beginning of the lesson. They are going to categorize the different characteristics of rock
types.

Scientific Vocabulary: rock cycle, igneous, metamorphic, sedimentary

Instructional Objective: Students should be able to answer 12 out of 15 (80%) questions

correctly on different characteristics of rocks and how they are formed. Also, they should able to
tell what type of rock they were given at the beginning of the lesson is.

Prior Knowledge (student): The students should know how to look at an object and talk about
what they observe from this object. Also, they should know what the three different types of
rocks are.
Content Knowledge (teacher): The teacher should know the characteristics of the different types
of rocks and how they are formed.
Accommodations for special needs (individual and/or small group): This class is a Talent
Development class, so I do not see the need to make any accommodations for special needs.
Materials and Technology requirements:
-21 rocks with a number on each one; one for each student in the class
-10 sets of card sorts; one for each pair of students
-21 charts for classifying rocks
-21 evaluation worksheets
-A PowerPoint https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Ttw3yJLgiClfmvARuB9wQ_sqpnR3LNvyWddgPFf4h
X8/edit?usp=sharing
Total Estimated Time: I think this lesson will only take one day because it is just introducing
how to classify rocks and not getting really deep into the topic.
Source of lesson:
-Macmillan McGraw-Hill Science: North Carolina
Safety considerations:
-I will make sure that with the rocks that I pass out do not have any sharp edges so students dont
hurt themselves on the rocks.
-I will have everything precut for the students because they dont have to use scissors then and it
saves time.

Content and Strategies (Procedure)

In your procedure, be sure to include all of the following 5 Es. Your procedure should be
detailed enough for a colleague to follow. If you will be relying on technology (e.g., a YouTube
video), describe your back up plan thoroughly. Imagine your most novice colleague needing to
teach from your plan. Dont just answer the questions. Additionally, I expect you to include
possible questions you could ask for each section. This needs to include higher-order questions.
Engage:
Students already know the different types of rocks from previous lessons with their teacher, so I
ask them questions about that.
What is a sedimentary rock?
What is a metamorphic rock?
What is an igneous rock?
On each set of desks there will be 3 different rocks that are labeled with a number. I allow them
to look at their rocks and make observation on it. I ask them some questions about their rocks.
What are some colors that you notice in your rocks?
What are some other important characteristics of the rocks?
After we talked about some of the characteristics of their rocks I have them write down
everything the notice on a piece of paper.
Explore:
Rock Characteristics Card Sort
Students will work with the person next to them on this activity. Each pair of students (one group
of 3) will get a set of cards. I ask students how they think they will be sorting the cards based off
what they see on it. I let them sort the cards then and I walk around asking while they are
working. As they work I ask questions, such as:
How did you know which characteristics go together?
Do you some types of rocks share characteristics?
Explanation:
Rock Characteristics PowerPoint
After everyone has finished sorting the cards I pull the class back together to talk about things
they noticed while sorting the characteristics. Then we talk about key things to look for when
trying to classify their rocks.
I show them a PowerPoint that I created on key characteristics to look at in rocks when trying to
identify what kind of rock it is. While we go through the PowerPoint I ask questions to see how
well they understand the connections between how the rocks are formed and the characteristics.
When looking at a sedimentary rock can you see different layers in it?
When looking at a metamorphic rock can you see kind of ribbon like layers?
When looking at a igneous rock can you see gas bubbles or maybe that it is very shiny?

Elaborate:
Classifying Their Rocks
Students will head back to their tables and work with their table members to determine what kind
of rocks they have at their table. They will need to fill in the chart worksheet with evidence that
supports what type of rock they think it is. As students are working I will walk around asking
questions, such as
What things are you looking for in your rocks?
What characteristics have you noticed in your rock?
Evaluate:
Summative:
Students will complete a worksheet in which they have to classify the three rocks that were on
their tables at the beginning of the lesson and then answer some questions about how rocks are
formed and the different characteristics of rocks.
Formative:
As students are working I will be walking around the classroom asking questions during each
portion of the lesson to check for understanding.
To be completed after the lesson is taught as appropriate

Classifying Rocks
1-6. Take some time to look at the rocks on your table. With the people at your table work together and
discuss the different characteristics of the rocks. Write down the characteristics that you notice. Based off of
these characteristics determine what types (metamorphic, igneous, or sedimentary) of rocks you have. (1
point each)

crystals and has a coarse texture from magma cooling slowly.
8. A metamorphic rock is formed when there is a lot of _______________ and

9. When _______________ and _______________ breaks down rocks into
sediment it then needs _______________ and _______________ to turn into a

10. A metamorphic that has minerals formed into large crystals is called a
_______________ metamorphic rock.
11. When lava cools quickly it forms small or no crystals in an
_______________ _______________ rock.
12. A(n) _______________ _______________ rock is formed when large pieces
of rocks/pebbles are cemented together.
13. When other rocks are melted down it becomes magma, when the magma
_______________ and _______________ either inside or outside the Earth it
forms an igneous rock.
14. A metamorphic rock that has ribbon like layers in it is called a
_______________ metamorphic rock.

15. When fine pieces of rocks/pebbles are cemented together they create
_______________ _______________ rocks.
