Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), It Utilizes Networked Services As

Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) is an approach to building applications using networked services as fundamental elements. A service is a self-contained unit of functionality that is deployed, published, and invoked over the network. Components in an SOA interact loosely through open XML message formats. As applications transition to SOA, relational databases also need to support integration with SOA. This report identifies service interfaces relational databases should support, approaches to integrate existing databases into SOA, and how to generate updatable XML views from relational data.

Service Oriented Architecture

ABSTRACT
A Service is a self-contained unit of functionality that is
deployed, published and invoked over the network. In recent times a new
approach to architecting Enterprise Applications has emerged: Termed as
Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), it utilizes networked services as
fundamental elements to build applications. The components in a SOA are
loosely coupled and interact with each other using open XML message
formats.
Relational databases are used by most contemporary applications
as the preferred way of storing structured data. As applications transition
towards a SOA paradigm, it is highly desirable that relational databases
also provide support for integration with SOA. In this seminar report we
first look at the concepts of SOA and the motivation for RDBMS to
implement SOA. Then we identify the service interfaces to be supported
by RDBMS. We also look at the possible approaches to integrate existing
database platforms in a SOA. Finally we look at interoperability between
XML and Relational data models - ability to generate XML Views from
Relational Data and the updatability of these views.
