Notes - Coherent and Non Coherent Detection

This document discusses coherent and non-coherent detection and demodulation techniques. It provides details on DPSK detection, noting that it does not require a carrier phase reference, allowing for a simpler receiver design, but is less efficient than PSK due to error propagation. Non-coherent FSK is also discussed. The document outlines an assignment on implementing MPSK modulation and demodulation in MATLAB or Simulink for a minimum value of M=8. A report and code are to be submitted by the given deadline.

Digital Communication

DPSK Detection
Does not require phase reference of the
received carrier, hence a simpler receiver
design.
Less efficient than PSK due to error
propagation
Error performance of DPSK approximately two
time (3dB) worse than PSK.

Assignment 3
Encode an M-ary binary sequence using MPSK. Use Gray code for
binary code and phase assignment.
Add AWGN noise to the encoded signal to generate transmitted
signal si(t) (i= 1,2..M)
Design an MPSK demodulator to detect the M-ary signal using
coherent detection.

Implement using MATLAB or SIMULINK.

The modulator/demodulator should work for a minimum value of
M = 8.
