SCOPE
This MESC SPE specifies requirements for globe valves.
This specification shall apply in addition to the applicable MESC Buying Description,
purchase order or requisition sheet.
The requirements for operation and maintenance of globe valves are outside the scope of
this MESC SPE.
This specification is written as amendments and supplements to BS 1873:1975, which are
covered in Part II of this MESC SPE. The clause numbering of BS 1873:1975 has been
retained and any amendments are identified as Add, Modify to read or Delete. Any
clauses of BS 1873:1975 that are not amended or supplemented by this MESC SPE, shall
apply as written.

DEFINITIONS
The Contractor is the party that carries out all or part of the design, engineering,
procurement, construction, commissioning or management of a project, or operation or
maintenance of a facility. The Principal may undertake all or part of the duties of the
Contractor.
The Manufacturer/Supplier is the party that manufactures or supplies equipment and
services to perform the duties specified by the Contractor.
The Principal is the party that initiates the project and ultimately pays for its design and
construction. The Principal will generally specify the technical requirements. The Principal
may also include an agent or consultant authorised to act for, and on behalf of, the
Principal.
The word shall indicates a requirement.

The body to bonnet connection shall be flanged and the flange facings shall be
male-and-female, tongue-and-groove, or ring joint type. Flange sealing faces shall
have a circular shape and shall have a Flange Facing Finish in accordance with
ASME B16.5.
Ring-joint gaskets shall have a hardness equal to or less than that shown ASME
B16.20, Table 1. In addition, the difference in hardness between the ring-joint
gasket and the body/bonnet groove shall be at least 30 Brinell (HBW).

The hand wheel diameter shall not exceed the end-to-end length of the valve
for classes 300 and above. Handwheel dimensions for class 150 valves shall
not exceed twice end to end dimensions.

If it is specified that the valve will be installed underground or at a level below the
operators position, the valve shall have a stem extension to enable remote
operation. Valves to be installed underground shall also have an extension
enclosure.
If a stem extension enclosure is specified, the valve shall be provided with a fully
enclosed, coated stem protector. The minimum clearance between the top of the
stem and the top of the stem protector, with the valve in the fully open position, shall
be 25 mm (0.98 in). If the stem protector obscures the position of the stem it shall
be provided with a position indicator.

No more than six packing rings shall be installed in the packing box.

The stem shall be suitably supported and have clearances designed, such that
with all anticipated side loads it does not make rubbing contact with the
adjacent static metallic components (bonnet, gland ring etc), which may lead to
galling.
The gland follower shall be installed so that it protrudes into the stuffing box before
compressing the packing rings.

The bolt sizing shall be in accordance with ASME B16.34 and ASME VIII Division 1,
Appendix 2.

Gear operated and actuated valves shall be fitted with a mounting flange in
accordance with ISO 5210.

The force required to operate the hand wheel shall not exceed 360 N (80 lbf) for
cycling and unseating the valve. However the maximum momentary force Fs in
accordance with EN 12570, Clause 5.1 is allowed for seating the valve.

If the force and dimensional limitations, specified in respectively clauses 16.5 and
12.1, are exceeded, the valve shall be provided with a gearbox:

Gearboxes with an outer casing for the stem shall be provided with a position
indicator.
The dimensions of the gearbox shall not exceed the end-to-end dimensions of
the valve for classes 300 and above. Gearboxes dimensions for class 150
valves shall not exceed twice the valve end to end dimensions.
When the number of hand wheel turns exceeds 100 from fully open to
fully closed, the manufacturer shall specify the number of handwheel turns on
the quotation.
Verify that the actuator manufacturer has reviewed the information supplied by
the valve manufacturer.
Ensure that the valve stem design takes into account a safety factor based on
the maximum output torque or force of the actuator. Unless specified otherwise,
this safety factor shall be 1.5. The stem strength shall match that of the
actuator; by inference the stem shall be oversized to accommodate the safety
factor of the actuator. Safety factors of stem design and actuator are not
cumulative.
Gear operated and actuated valves shall be designed to prevent damage to the
drive train of the valve.

If retaining tabs are applied for securing of valve parts, they shall be compatible
with the body material.

The chloride content of test water in contact with austenitic and duplex stainless
steel wetted components of valves shall not exceed 30 g/g (30 ppm by mass).
Valves with a gear operator or actuator shall be seat tested after assembly of
the operating mechanism.
The minimum test duration shall be 60 s, which shall commence after the test
pressure has stabilised.
The back seat test is not required. To protect the valve stem from pitting
corrosion, the gland shall remain tightened with the valve back-seated during
the body hydrostatic test.
