CHEE319 Tutorial8 2014

This document contains 3 questions about synthesizing PID controllers for different plant models using direct synthesis. Question 1 asks to find suitable PID parameters to control 4 different plant models with a time constant of 1. Question 2 asks to design a PID controller for a plant model using direct synthesis with a time constant of 0.5 and comment on the closed-loop response for different alpha values. Question 3 asks to synthesize a PID controller for a different plant model using direct synthesis with a time constant of 0.1 and comment on the closed-loop response.

CHEE 319

Tutorial 8

Question 1
Consider the following systems, G(s):
1.

10
(s+1)(s+10)

2.

1
(s+1)(s2)

3.

1
s2 +s+1

4.

1
s(s+1)

Find the suitable values for the parameters of a member of the PID family to control each of these
models (For direct synthesis, use c = 1).
Question 2
Consider the model
G(s) =

(s + 1)
(s + 1)(s + 2)

(1)

Use direct synthesis to design a PID controller c = 0.5. Compute the complementary sensitivity
function. Comment on the servo-response of the closed-loop system for in the interval [0.1; 20].
Question 3
Consider a plant with nominal model

G(s) =

s + 3
(s + 3)(s + 5)

(2)

Using direct synthesis, synthesize a PID controller for this system, with c = 0.1.
Compute the complementary sensitivity function. Comment on the servo-response of the
closed-loop system.
